music video "shreds"

Post by J.F. »

I've been a good boy and searched for "shred" and "shreds", but didn't find anything related to this.

Maybe I'm late with those video-shreds anyway, and everybody already yawns over these. Sorry, then.

Maybe this shouldn't have gone in a seperate thread (it's all YouTube videos). Any mod feel free to do what you want.
But this kind of clips made my... afternoon.

So here are a few:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jaHMGB5k ... re=related -Led Zeppelin
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HEOJ7jSx ... re=related -Toto

... and there are many more. :P

The Yngwie Malmsteen one is great too, seems to have been taken down from youtube.

These things are too funny. Almost as funny as Axl Rose concert clips, but that's for another thread.

The Santana one is the first I saw, and it still is the funniest I've seen, mostly because he looks like a total dick. I love the interplay between Carlos and the keyboard player. They're so tight!

Here's another good one:

i love these, the clapton one is my favorite. he's such an emo wank. i love how he's always wearing his "oh-face".

What probably adds a little drama is that in certain cases, there certainly was more creative consideration put into the "shred"-track than into the replaced original.

haha.

some of the shreds are actually kind of enjoyable in a musical way. in some cases way more than the originals, as clapton is example. the Paco one has a certain bailey-esque thing going on.

This one knocked me out, recently:

But the Santana is probably still my favorite.

yeah i love this concept. some of them are a little too close to reality, but it's hilarious to see the guitar gods making orgasm faces while playing what sounds like a between-songs interlude from an off-night on a Dead tour.

it would be fun to try to make some of these with avant garde musicians...

i saw some interviews with this guy (there was a piece in wired magazine, if you poke around), and there's this other amazing element where you think about how long the guy clearly spent doing this many videos, and matching what he does fairly well to what's on screen (i.e. he generally hits notes at the same time and moves up and down the neck with the players). he said he does several takes for each one; totally gives me an image of dude holed up at home for weeks doing nothing but atonal solos. weren't these all taken down from youtube at some point?

Indeed. STSanders was the name of the guy who first posted them, and one of his targets must have not seen the funny side. I can't even think who could take offence at something like this: the Santana one got funnier each time I watched it, somehow. Anyway, plenty of people uploaded them as soon as his account was wiped. I have yet to work out if he has returned under another name.

Some of my other favourites are Iron Maiden, Ozzie Osbourne/Jake E.Lee & Eric Clapton.

Somebody did a tribute to STSanders sterling work, this time on Oscar Peterson.

And that was my first post... hi y'all. (green=link)

St. Sanders has a website now. Kiss Shreds is pretty funny.
Unfortunately, there are a lot of impersonators now who are not nearly as good. The backlash to this has been started now via the Alf Shreds video that Brace Paine made- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JgXhauWbQQE

This is just plain awful. Whatever happened to Marsalis’s embouchure? Sounds like someone fucked up his lips with a Brillo pad just before the session. And the guy who did the string arrangement should be beaten to death with one of Letterman’s Reeboks.
The others are even worse. Weasel excepted.

Yeah they are really hilarious. My favorites are probably the Paco de Lucia and Santana ones. I think especially the Paco de Lucia gets a lot funnier after you check out the original clip.

Some of the imitators are pretty succesfull as well IMO. For example I really like the end of this Radiohead overdub when the FX guy kicks in:

"I don't blow, I suck" is a nice taomud stance, though the ensemble seems less than sympathetic, rather it blows.

I just found out about these. I'm dyin' watching these things the past couple of days. This Steve Vai clip is a personal fave. The section beginning at 1:59 is too much.
