Mangelsdorff overhere was something of a local musician. Last but not least for that I'm pretty familiar with his (60s - early 80s) output, but I wasn't aware this one exists.


Now playing is... I made an mp3-CDRW with all tracks of the Pere Ubu-CDs I recently bought, listened to all that several times and by and by deleted the tracks I more or less dislike. It boils down more and more to an excellent Pere Ubu-mix (it's probably my tenth run now, through maybe two hours left at this point. )

The very early Ubu-songs indeed are quite different from the later vehicles for David Thomas' excentric vocal excursions (while I like both aspects about the same).

P.S.
I have a bunch of unofficial live recordings to round up the picture, but those don't get me particularly excited so far.

How are his string quartets?

I collected some of his works on CD and was quite disappointed. Especially the stuff he writes for himself to play (chamber works with or for clarinet) I found quite lousy.

Widmann - I don't really feel as if I have a good handle on what he's getting at, these string quartets are my first encounter with his work, so I'm only now in the process of developing an opinion about his work. If I'm remembering correctly, I heard of him as a next-generation Rihm (not sure how strong an endorsement that is...), and am probably hearing his works at least a little in that light.

I could understand that Rihm-reference in regards of public presence in and "importance" to the music life in Germany. Stylistically I perceive Rihm pretty differently, though I have several favorite works of his which strongly shape my quite personal Rihm-picture (while I think to relate Pintscher stylisitically to Rihm actually would be more appropriate).

Maybe I should go into some CD-shop to try out those Widmann-quartets - they might help to revise my quite bad opinion about him (based on the earlier Wergo-chamber works-CD and other single Widmann-tracks spread over various samplers).
