Just today I listened to a CD I compiled some while ago, with Zappa tunes based on marimba... you know... those rather complex tunes including all those very fast lines and breaks, with everybody, full breathtaking virtuosity, going ImageImageImage in perfect unison, implying that more is more.

:D
Actually, that's not what I'm listening for - it's a bit deeper than that.

I'm a big fan of masturbating in perfect unison.

Matt Davis Violence (Field)

First listen here and I have to say my skirt is staying firmly around my ankles. I feel like I have heard this before. Time has continued it's relentless march and Matt Davis has fallen behind. But don't listen to me, you can download it at the link above.

I'm listening to an Elliott Sharp mix, focussed on Carbon 1986-1994. Now playing is the lovely C.I.A. Pope.

(agree, high volume and focused listening is important here)

this one takes a while to get going. the first 20 minutes sound almost territorial to me. like, the 4 players are trying to establish boundaries, and maybe tend to dwell at times a little.
But round about minute 20 the piece enters a vortex of almost visual interplays, each one better than the one before. I think the 15 minutes that follow is the best eai I've heard.

overall the album is probably too long for repeated focused listening, but IMO a confident (dare i say mature?) statement of this art.

Also,
Crax (Cor Fuhler, Axel Dörner, Clare Cooper)
Same sentiments as the one above. Not sure if this is eai, efi or 21st century jazz, it is just awesome music. (pity about the poor cover).

Mature is definitely a good word for that album. Its almost as if these four musicians have gone past the stage of needing to show off with a firework display of tricks and stripped things down to basic elements positioned in precisely the right places. Its a really subtle album that indeed takes a number of plays to really get to grips with and not something you can throw on while making the dinner and expect to be wowed.

I like this one too, but regarding the cover... this isn't even a proper release, just one of a few CDrs that Cor intended to just sell at concerts. I think we should be thankful he even goes to the lengths he does!

Yeah, it's tricky to find the right balance between giving it an authentic feeling and not spend any money on it.

It's just the cheapest cover + a handmade stamp (from the inside tube of a bicycle) for the title. Then I have 3 different stamps (+ different colours) to use in a different combination for each different "release".

glad you both like the music
it's the first one in which I use my latest set up in the piano, creating very misty/hazy sounds, like a veil maybe, not to cover up something, but to colour silence, sort of....

Cor you sound like a dodgy painter/decorator... "Its just a thin haze, not to cover up the Crax, but to had a hint to the silence..."

I'm stunned to hear you make the stamps out of an old inner tube. I had visions of you sat there cutting up potatoes.

(refreshing to hear them playing and singing overdub-free)

Since there's no cover, I made my own using this picture:

yeah, I also made potatoe stamps when I was a kid.
But did you also have visions of me getting that same potato out of the closet after half a year for the next bunch of Cdr's?

I dunno, I found this one pretty bland overall. And yeah I listened to it loud - and soft, and on headphones. As for not showing off what about those cymbal crashes (or whatever) from Beins? I thought that was particularly misplaced. All in all an okay disc but leaning too far toward the ez-eai end of the spectrum for my tastes.
