the only graduate of Takayanagi's school, he has at least one solo disc on PSF, and maybe two. he has a new trio CD/DVD release on doubtmusic in a few weeks, with Atsuhiro Ito on optron and someone I don't remember on electronics.

I thought Akira Iijima graduated as well..

But Takayangi was such a harsh pedegogue ( Lennie Tristano level ), how could anyone "graduate"...

Don't mean to restart the debate from IHR, but I'm really liking this...
Picked it up not long after it came out, listened to it twice and shelved it. I'm glad I gave it another chance. I'm even digging the much-lambasted organ track (and while I'll agree it isn't always the most nuanced use of the instrument... it still works for me).

How is this for you Tom with regard to the language? I'm curious to know what someone who doesn't speak fluent French makes of it (if you do speak fluent French, my apologies!!!). The dialogue between the kids is gorgeous. (Nice violin playing too ;) )

I'm interested in hearing this. Dan, as you probably know, it seems that to most English speakers (at least to people I know in the U.S.) French always sounds pretty. My friend once told me it's surprisingly not very good for opera. I really have no evidence of that since I'm not an expert on French or opera.

My favorite example in English speakers' thoughts on French versus German:
the word for butterfly

French: papillon
I think we really like French's use of liquids and omissions of letters, ending so much with a vowel sound.
German: Schmetterling
With its root meaning to pick something up and throw it down.

I heard French doesn't differentiate in language between a sheep and a piece of its meat, mutton.

Hisato Higuchi - Dialogue [Family Vineyard]
Cosmos - Tears [Erstwhile]

a night of delicate (yet powerful?) singing among other sounds.

Cheers - home internet connection finally operational today.

Earlier I was listening to Joel Stern / Anthony Guerra's "Outdoor Bowers" on my iPod at a level that allowed the alien (to me) sound of antipodean birds and insects to interact with it. Nice.

That's a great nugget, indeed. I studied Russian daily for four years and Polish daily for three, which kind of ended up cancelling each other out but anyway, my girlfriend in college would physically tremble, cover her ears and bolt out of the room whenever I would speak Polish, I used to toy with her, with the most guttural, adenoidal if meaningless phrases I could come up with. And brevity was key because as said, she was out of the room in seconds.

"Przepraszam! Jestem spóźniony!" was a real hoot (more or less "Excuse me, but I am in a hurry!"), she would get so fearfully pissed at that one, never fully understood the roots of this curious phenomenon.

No, that's because English kept the old Saxon words for the animals themselves - pig, sheep, cow - and imported the meat words from French: pork (porc), mutton (mouton) and beef (boeuf). No remarks on English cooking please :)

Still listening to that Cosmos? You've been giving it some heavy play there!

Considering I was fluent in French years ago, certain percentage of the language never died......I actually cheated and put some of the titles through one of those "free translation" services
This is one of these releases that definitely works best on a good pair of headphones. I'm loving it to death :!: :!:

I think a better translation would be "Excuse me, I'm late!"

I suppose that makes sense. I didn't know the details like that though. thanks for the backstory.
