The Hands Of Caravaggio

Hadn't listened to this for over three years, and was blown away. There are really some exquisite moments there, as well as the hustle and tussle when things get busy (which, though dense, is never muddy). What struck me was how traditional it sounded, following the old rise and fall pattern quite well. Instrumentation aside, I didn't find it all that different from the LIO :) Lovely stuff. Forget the Curran / Tilbury brouhaha and listen to the music. It stands the test of time very well.

since the resolution of this seems to be much less known than Eddie's initial chapter about it, let me restate it again for the record.

a couple of years after the book came out, after all the people actually involved in the recording were baffled about what Eddie was talking about (myself, Keith, Marcus S), we came across a bootleg of the show in question (made by our friend Luka). it turned out that what Curran and Tilbury were remembering was the piece that came after the Caravaggio piece, the full-group plus 3-4 extra Italians ensemble improv. that did indeed get way too loud and was pretty pointless, but that also had no overlap with the piece of music on the recording, it was entirely different. if Eddie had actually queried any of the people involved in the recording before publishing, we might have been able to piece this together and save a lot of pointless talk about nothing, but he didn't.

oh, and luka's bootleg of the actual caravaggio piece shows that the CD isn't far off what he heard in his seat that night (of course with a quad mix and each musician only mixed into the two speakers on each side of them, everyone heard something at least slightly different).

Though obviously I can't say what Curran or Tilbury were remembering, I can confirm having heard this bootleg, that the main concert recording isn't too far away from the CD, and the "encore" that follows is very loud indeed.

Masafumi Ezaki - Othello / 3 Minutes (Slub)

If you are into this area of music and enjoyed the Chamber Music Concerts set this is another nice one. The first piece, Othello is for two guitars Shinichi Ishohata and Taku Sugimoto) a flute (Mitsutero Takeuchi) and Ezaki's trumpet. Lots of notes, but all about half a second long in slowly shifting patterns. 3 Minutes is a series of eight three minute long pieces containing a lot more silence than Othello, with sudden little bursts of sound here and there. 3 Minutes is for the same group minus Sugimoto. Yet again not easy music but I think this will be rewarding over time.

this is very good, along with "three backgrounds" mentioned earlier.
i think the trick here is to find the right playback volume to appreciate them. too loud and the background noise overwhelms the music. To low and you miss the passion.

I don't understand this. Do you mean the volume you play the CD back on your stereo at home? If so the ratio of music to background noise heard on the CD would remain the same no matter what volume you play it at.

Four tracks, the first a three minute long loud single note sine tone, the second a realisation of the now notorious Objective 1/2 composition ripped apart by many in another thread here, the third is twenty eight seconds of complete silence divided into eight four second parts, and finally a vaguely techno-esque piece of rhythmic music titled "four to the floor" created by tapping and rubbing the internal mic of a laptop.....

Thanks. Hmm. Well how was the Objective 1/2 realization?
