Some of these are pretty off track from the original request, but I can second these recommendations, particularly the ones I've put an exclamation mark next to, as these come closer to your original request, Nebulabore.

I'll add Catherine Ribero to the pot, French early 70's gear, sits somewhere half way between Fontaine & Nico to my ears, although some of her stuff is more band oriented than solo.

I'm not deeply familiar with Kammerer's stuff, and have a quick question about some of it. There's a red CD on Charizma featuring a number of remixes/ production collaborations, which I forget the name of - worth checking out? I like about2/3 of The Magic ID, if that helps.
yeah, as i said, sort of a random assortment of things there in my post, not really conforming to the initial post, just female solo artists i enjoy. some of them you might like though, nebulabore.

i REALLY like the solo kammerer stuff on that charizma disc, but the remix stuff quite significantly less so. i went as far as to make a playlist of just the solo stuff and leave the remix stuff off. it's worth a look though.

as far as christina carter, i don't think i like any of her solo work besides one cdr - 'lace heart'.

I've not go into her recorded work before or since but I enjoyed MIA's live show that I caught by accident last year. Loads of energy!

I know.. I think I got overly excited by the post title "solo female artists" (though I would maintain that I'm curling up with headphones for most of my list - particularly Susan Alcorn)

By the way - I was a HUGE Julee Cruise fan.. wonder what ever happened to her...

and I second Patsy Cline and let's not forget my endless obsession with PP Arnold http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0sH4dq_ ... re=related" onclick= "window.open(this.href);return false;

and I like Dusty Springfield a lot too....

julee cruise is on marcus schmickler's new pluramon record. i couldn't stand it, but i just found a video opera by david lynch that features her prominently too: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Industrial_Symphony_No._1" onclick= "window.open(this.href);return false; (not that this is new)

just a thought: bonnie jones / susan alcorn duo... the world is ready.

as for the original post, you might like nina nastasia, specifically her album with jim white.

i'm a fan of josephine foster, though she can be hard to take-- psychedelic folk with opera-trained vocals, and she also has some children's music records.

I'm quite enamored of one miss Laura Gibson.

She's wonderful live and even better when recorded.

Not my cuppa musically, but I met Larkin Grimm at a gallery show here, she's a fierce young woman in many respects.

Second this - Foster would be at the top of my list, not just of 'solo female artists', but singers generally. I would also add - in a similar vein of 'contemporary female American folk or folk-inspired voices' - Marissa Nadler, Meg Baird (the singer from Espers), and maybe (the latest Nevada City debutante after her friend Alela Diane) Mariee Sioux, whose voice is perhaps a bit saccharine for some. Larkin Grimm, mentioned by Jesse above, is one name from this category I've been unable to get into. Further along the saccharine scale is Lavender Diamond a.k.a. Becky Stark, whose post-Newsom 'cuteness' will have many clawing their eyes out, but I reacted sympathetically.

Reaching back in time: the first couple of records by Joan Baez (many despise her warbling, and it is of course the antithesis of hipster taste, but I think the 1960-61 sessions when she was still sticking to simple renditions of trad stuff are worth a listen), and anything from the plethora of female British folk revivalists - Shirley Collins, Anne Briggs, Maddy Prior, etc. - although I would personally leave out Sandy Denny as overrated. And one could also look to non-commercial trad singers, such as the Irish Margaret Barry.

I listen to all of these on headphones, although am not conscious of a curling motion. These recs presuppose a taste for folk and its pop variants.

thanks. I had a copy of Larkin Grimm's first album at one point, really haunting stuff. Totally awesome.

in response to the posters who say they're mainly a male music fan, how come?

I can second all of these. I've seen Oum Khalsoum spelt about a dozen ways in English though. Check out Fairuz while you're looking into that one.

Sybille Baier comes pretty close to the original request, also.
