3" Recording Labels?

Post by bonniejones »

Dear IHM,

A sad farewell and a question for all of you.

First, I just noticed today EMR Records http://www.emr-records.com" onclick= "window.open(this.href);return false; is officially dead - very sad as it was a nice label with some nice releases.

But that leads me to my next question. I have a 23 minute recording of myself and Andrea Neumann that I was hoping to find a home for. Does anyone know of another label that puts out 3" CD / CDR? Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks everyone!

Sorry to hear about EMR; I have a Eubanks solo drone release, and a Eubanks/Rothbaum collaboration, both worth hearing.
Bonnie, have you contacted Richard at Cathnor?

i know hibari music have the 3 inch cd of their catalogs, eric la casa's elevator music. it's not a regular format i think.
a bruit secret has very fine mini discs, but it's dead, too.
recently i found japanese records called "ao to ao", there're two miniCDs on their catalog, one of them really great Minoru Sato/Ami Yoshida 's composition.

As it happens I've had Olaf working on sleeve designs for the first (hideously delayed) 3" CDRs on Cathnor this very evening.

I hope to have the first three out into the world during September. A fourth has also been added to the series, by Bryan Eubanks and Ryu Hankil.

Bonnie I'd love to hear the recording and give it consideration. Email me at Richard (at) Cathnor (dot) com if you wish.

I'd like a modest "finder's fee." :P

Bonnie,

You should try Chandan Narayan's Simple Geometry label. He might be interested, especially since he loves Neumann. If you don't have his contact info send me a private message and I'll give you his email.

emr's end was brought about by a very serious computer malfunction, but it will not be the last we'll hear from david as a label head. there is stuff in the works...

Esquilo also has a 3" series programmed since its inception - the first 2 releases on this series will most likely see the light of the day sometime in september...

Sad news about EMR. Some awesome discs in that catalog.

Watch out soon for the 3" series on rar. First up (really soon) discs by myself and Ricky Laska. Followed eventually by Steven Flato (and Wet Fur? Reed can you confirm or deny?). And then I don't know for sure what their further plans once these 4 solos are out.

how much material can you get onto a 3 inch? redbook standard says 21 minutes, so 23 might be pushing it, not sure...

I know I've listened to 23 minute 3" releases but I wouldn't push it myself. If you want to make sure people can play your disc back, I tend to think it's better to stick to the safety of the 21 minute mark....

All the prices i have for 3'' cd (not cdr) show that it's more expansive to manufacture than a standard cd. So, it's an economical nonsense to release a 3'' cd since you have to sell it at low price (half of a regular cd ?) and it costs higher than a CD.
But maybe i haven't find the right manufacturers (but i doubt) ...

I'm pretty sure it's an economical nonsense to release this kind of music at all, regardless of what format it's on. No-one's doing this to make money.
