even as a popcorn movie it was fine until the very end. the ending was stupid
Agreed ... only thing that could "redeem" the ending is if it had been a set up for a future hancock vs. batman (a la Alien vs. Predator), though the redemption value of that is probably comparable to that of an aluminum can.

And The Ship Sails On (Fellini, 1983) - Minimal plot, little character development, lots of opera, superfluous historical context, "awful" special effects (notice the cellophane ocean above - which is actually quite nice). And yet it still wasnt too bad. Easily the worst Fellini I've seen, but it still had its moments.

I hadn't seen this in a few years. I still really like it. The animation is very nice, the soundtrack is beautiful, the politics are hip, and it makes me cry.

Yeah that's a fantastic film, one of the best of American animation.

Iron Giant? Yes indeed. Thirded, if that's allowed.

At the end, when the Iron Giant closes his eyes and says "Superman"....yeah, tears well up.

I saw that about a month ago too. What the hell was Vince Vaughn doing in that movie? I get the feeling he'll take any bit part that doesnt cast him as "wise-ass frat boy". That being said, he was totally miscast. As was Emile Hirsch (Chris), who seems much too young for that role.

Also, the book was better. But I will say if you've read the book, the movie is worth seeing for the striking imagery, especially of the bus. But the book gave me a much better sense of Chris' character and ideology and psychology.

Agreed. But I guess that's the difference between books and movies....I mean how could they have woven Krakauer's own story into the script? It wouldn't have been commercially viable.

Hirsch was alright in my opinion. There were worse choices ( Vince Vaughn? heh..)

The visuals and the landscapes were wonderful. It makes me really regret not seeing it in the theater.

A Bronx Tale (dir. Robert DeNiro, 1993)

A friend lent me this purporting it to be some forgotten classic of the mob-film genre... I think I'd have a hard time agreeing with that, but I did enjoy it. Pretty interesting to watch Robert DeNiro's suprisingly competent, (and at times) Scorsese-esque directing. It gave me a hankerin' to watch:
