To respond to all the discussion spurred by my now listening post....

I love "hammer & tongs" haven't heard "beetroits" though.... Document07 actually reminds me of that Stasis Duo aesthetic a lot. I was actually pretty worried when I put it on that it would be more like his 2 disc solo Document03 which always strikes me as much more of an artistic statement than a musical one. And, since it's been mentioned, I'll add another round of support for the awesome "Bridges"

Spent yesterday with a lot of aussie stuff. LIstening to my new Document purchases since erstdist restocked 'em and re-listening to old stuff. Re: Gulbenkoglu, I only had heard "Points Alone" before, which I love. And finally hearing Document09 didn't disappoint at all. Except in the fact that it's under 20 minutes! left me seriously craving more. A lot of it heavily reminded me of the Sussmann acoustic solo which I only have mp3s of someplace. The sounds those guys coax out of an acoustic guitar just boggle my mind.

But on a slightly less confidently positive note, the Matt Earle/Rory Brown duo (Document 10) really confused me. I don't know if anybody else has heard it. I can't tell if the noise floor is so high that I can't identify the deliberate sounds or if that constant "noise" I perceive is part of the music. Neither one of those aesthetics would particularly surprise me. But the fact that he's listed as playing percussion and Brown on bass (occasionally I think I can hear the bass...) makes it particularly mysterious.

I don't know how I feel about this one yet. The lingering thought I have after one listen is "kick drum happy".

Henry Cowell - Piano Music


Have been listening to Cowell at the exclusion of all else this last week. His early piano pieces are amazing (especially "Tides of Manaunaun" - ), and the symphonic/orchestral works I've been able to track down are great too.
