Yeah, I think so. The Duellist maybe? The story is (unsurprisingly) pretty good.Dohol wrote:walto wrote:I remember seeing a really horrific version of a Conrad short story called something like "The Duel" many years ago.
Keith Carradine is a painrfully bad actor. You have to watch movies like that covering your eyes and peeking between your fingers now and then.
Wasn't Harvey Kietel in it as well? I saw this a long time ago..
If I'm not mistaken it's an early Ridley Scott film..

A less than sane surgeon trying to find an appropriate body for his girlfriends decapitated head. An unmentionable....thing...locked in the cellar. Uuhh...This one is really pretty bad in a "I can't help looking at that car wreck" kind of way..

Has anybody mentioned Dern's Incredible Two-Headed Transplant?

Now come on, I can't believe this hasn't been mentioned yet:

Probably the worst acting I've ever seen. A script written in broken English by an Italian, and then performed in broken English by American actors. Goblins living in Nilbog. Incredible.

Troll 2 is a work of demented genius, for sure. I have a "You can't piss on hospitality!" t-shirt upstairs somewhere, courtesy of a friend's visit to a sci-fi memorabilia fair.
I think my favourite good-bad film is "Manos: The Hands Of Fate". I know, for an MST3K fan, it's the most obvious choice, but there's a reason why some stereotypes are there. Like a film made by aliens who knew nothing about human society. Although that would probably be better than this.

"To know life Otto, you have to fuck death... in the gall bladder!"
Outstanding.
Re: Best bad movies?
Agreed, but the sex scenes are better in the Dracula one.
Also the soundtrack is really beautiful.

What an absolutely awesome film that is. It almost caused two friends of mine to break up because she accused him of being into nothing but porno, dressed up.Gaendaal wrote: "To know life Otto, you have to fuck death... in the gall bladder!"

While I know absolutely nothing of the people or situation to which that comment relates, that could be an entirely fair statement...Silky Johnson wrote:What an absolutely awesome film that is. Love both those films.

COMMANDO
Here is some action!
If you were sad in 1985 because you missed COMMANDO on the big screen,
you can now say "I lied." The film returns this weekend in two
midnight screenings at the Music Box, so kidnap/rescue your daughter,
feed a deer some ice cream and wake up your dead tired friend. This is
THE classic Arnold film that sets the bar high for repressed
homosexual macho muscle tough action. Part of the joy in watching this
film is not knowing if its makers are serious; whether they have any
clue how their audience reacts to the its content. Its hard to gauge
based on director Mark Lester's previous ROLLER BOOGIE and CLASS OF
1984. What really offsets COMMANDO is how Arnold's jokes are not funny
(of course he can only talk in one liners) and all the moments of
sadness, struggle and life-loss are endless and completely satisfying.
Here Arnold plays John Matrix who, like all x-Colonels, never actually
gets a chance to x. This time he is forced back into the habit of
painting his face, emerging from swamps, and loading lots of guns
slowly so that he can rescue his daughter. Vernon Wells plays Bennett,
the most harmless villain, kidnapper in film history, Dan Hedaya is
another spray painted South American dictator (from Val Verda, the
fake South American country from all of Steven E de Souza's scripts)
and Alyssa Milano is Arnold's daughter. There is NO mention of a
mother. Why bother?
Here is the important COMMANDO trailer

Re: Best bad movies?
I really, really love Commando.
There's an interesting little making of on the extras for the dvd I just watched of this a few weeks back. The original script was written about an ex-Israeli special services guy who gets forced back into action, and was intended to be a more Deerhunter/ First Blood type affair. The studio who had the rights to it at the time were looking for an Arnie vehicle, and there you have it.

For some reason I just thought of The Forbin Project.

Re: Best bad movies?

You are looking at the rare film "POPULATION: 1 (a musical science-fiction fantasy)" by Renee Daalder. It is about 75 minutes long & stars Tomata Du Plenty & Shelia Edwards + includes some music & videos by the Screamers. Pop: 1 while superficially the story of the last living survivor of the great nuclear whatever, who's trapped in a underground bunker, it is actually a multilayered history of art, video, music & America's long lasting love affair with destruction. >> To get a better idea of how this film came together you can read a piece, penned by Hubert Mensch for the LA premier in the early 80's, about the Screamers, Renee Daalder & Population:1. > **** The Screamers' cathartic blend of stark Brechtian psychodrama, Egon Schele attire, minimal melodies and grinding, relentless beat earned them popularity among the range of counter-culture communities - from rich Fiorucci clones to the poorest punks. They were the first "punk" band to play the Roxy, to sell out 10 shows at the Whisky, to abolish guiters. But in 1979, at the absolute peak of the alternative music scene, they abruptly stopped performing. The center of operations shifted to an abandoned Vag-o-Matic warehouse on the wrong end of Melrose, refurbished into a slate-of-the-art video studio, where Dutch cult-film director Rene Daalder (whose films include Massacre at Central High) planned a videodisc revolution with the Screamers as its biggest stars. With his concept of the constantly moving camera, of videos that could happily be watched hundreds of times, records would be superseded by a complete media experience. Over the next couple of years, half the hipsters in LA passed through the studio's green doors to lay down tracks on the 24-track tape machine, or to add atmosphere to ongoing filmings. Screamers drummer K.K. Barrett built sets, composer/synthesist Tommy Gear wrote music, and singer Tomata du Plently - natch - was the star. Unfortunately, Duran Duran and happy-talk VJs beat Daalder to the punch - and the only product to issue from his collaboration with the Screamers was a disastrous multimedia Whisky show with Tomata and K.K. Now there's another. After a prolonged journey back to his drawing board, Daalder conceived Population: One, a postapocalyptic nightmare taken from the above-mentioned film sessions.

Has anyone seen the Crispin Glover movie What Is It? and can confirm that it belongs in this thread? "Being the adventures of a young man whose principle interests are snails, salt, a pipe, and how to get home. As tormented by an hubristic, racist inner psyche."

Re: Best bad movies?
Yes, I have. It screened at the Castro in San Francisco with Crispin Glover doing a reading from one of his books - the Ratcatcher, I think it was - and he did a Q&A session afterwards. One questioner was apparently quite upset about the abuse of the snails, but nobody brought up any objections to the film's playing with racist imagery. I think I asked him about influences, as the film seems fairly indebted to Even Dwarves Started Small (Herzog), and he did cite that film as an influence.bryan wrote:Has anyone seen the Crispin Glover movie What Is It? and can confirm that it belongs in this thread?
