I have a (very cheap) two disc set on the Stradivarius label. In general his solo tape material does little for me. The very earliest piece [Luigi Nono] made in 1966 that opens my set was quite promising, but after that the music becomes more focussed on lengthy political speeches in foreign tongues and loses a lot of the musical vitality for me..

Just to correct these rather lazy comments: the opening piece (Omaggio a Emilio Vedova) is from 1960, not 1966. "After that" on this set: a twenty-minute piece based on wordless vocals (with interpolations of crunching noise), composed to accompany a staging of Peter Weiss's great and harrowing play The Investigation; a variation and recasting of this material to function as a self-standing work; the great Contrappunto Dialettico Alla Mente (1967-68), a collage piece with diverse sources (vocal and non-vocal, studio and location recordings, one of which is a manifesto but not a speech) based on a text by the poet Nanni Balestrini and punctuated by spoken titles deriving from a Renaissance composer ("the fundamental element is the human voice"--Nono); and Musiche per Manzu (1969), the soundtrack to a short film about a sculptor, the music for which is a continuous electronic texture anticipating his later music with live electronics. None of these are "focused on political speeches." Only the short piece on the second disc, Für Paul Dessau incorporates recordings of these, which are collaged with some other of Nono's orchestral and vocal pieces.

I agree that these are relatively minor pieces (with the exception of Contrappunto and Omaggio--both of which can be found on better CDs). But, together with the iilluminating notes, they shed some light on his collaborative work with other artists. One to come back to later for those particularly interested in his work.

Yes I won't deny the lazy accusation. Pretty tired here right after 14 hours at work and couldn't be bothered to get up and check the details.

I probably shouldn't have posted sorry. I don't like the majority of the tape stuff much at all, but a more thoughtful explanation of why would have been better.

just had [Michael Nyman's soundtrack to Peter Greenaway's Drowning by Numbers]

Fantastic film, and Nyman's music often works well in them, not least for their structural placement in the film. Not sure I'd enjoy them by themselves, though. A Zed and Two Noughts has very good music also.
