Taku Sugimoto - Flagments of Paradise (Test, 1997)

The last Sugimoto release I have any interest in but did not own a physical copy of, picked up this week on eBay brand new. from the same year as Opposite.

it's small group stuff, though, not solo, and not anywhere near the same league as Opposite, sadly. I remember it being kind of a dud at the time, I haven't revisited it in years.

the one that is, I think, is the one before that, Myshkin Musicu, which I hope to score a copy of someday (anyone interested in possibly selling or trading me theirs, please get in touch).

I can do you a lossless burn if you really want one?

Listening through to Flagments... now I wouldn't call it a dud, because its still a very nice listen, but it doesn't possess the focus and singularity of Opposite. This actually reminds me somewhat of the Mon:Goose trio disc in its lazily thrown together little pieces.

it's really titled Fragments in Paradise, they just messed up the R/L thing in English on the cover.

and again, I'm mostly working from ten year old memories, but I decidedly preferred the mon.goose disc, that has the relaxed, comfortable vibe common to most of that wave of Slub releases, whereas Fragments of Paradise is more of a conscious studio recording, the music is more uptight and forced and the sound is too clean for that kind of music, an outlier in his catalog similarly to the Loren Connors release on OO Disc:

A 1978 reunion show of Country Joe & Barry Melton with Peter Albin (who'd toured with them in '69) and a few other players who were working with melton at the time. Got some pretty sublime moments like the currently playing Sweet Martha Lorraine.
Still finding it odd that I'd be told several years back that CJ & The Fish
didn't cut it live. Most of the live material I've heard contradicts this as had the clip on Monterey Pop which was the only thing I'd seen at the time. Thought the person who told me would know a thing or two, but he was actually talking me out of buying a bootleg I was looking at from his stall.
