James sends catalogs if you ask him.. however, the majority of those releases arent real. So I reccommend not placing an order through him...and if youre going to, make sure he sends you something. dozens of dudes i talk to both in and out of the U.S. have ordered tapes through James and havent gotten anything in return or their money back and its been over a year for some of them......

I had asked James for a catalog a while back on 2 separate e-mail accounts and both lists had completly different releases available. also, my friend in barcelona got a list a few days ago and it had even more new titles.. The same goes for a buddy in London.......... so just be careful with how you let go of your money. Make sure you get your tapes before the 60 day limit is up on Pay Pal, otherwise there is really nothing you can do other than hope his bad rep gets back around to him and he starts actually sending tapes out.

my friend anonymously e-mailed james about that recently. I know of at least 25 dudes who have sent james in the range of $20 - $175 from 6 months to 14 months ago and havent gotten a single thing. The dude is starting to get a horrible reputation.. the shittiest part about it is that he continues to do it.

heh, i didn't know about this. i ordered some stuff from him back in like 2004, and never saw it then. maybe a year later i tried again, and it worked out fine.

haven't tried to keep up since then, though.

Huh, so some guy who self-releases tons of cdrs is sort of flaky? This is completely shocking. Maybe it's a perforamce art / social aesthetics piece on the nature of the material commodity in the age of digital reproduction. Or, possibly, he smokes a lot of dope and forgets to do stuff...

edit: To be fair to the guy, I have a cdr billed as being axolotl/mouthus/skaters, it's not bad.

i think he just rips people off man. theres no big picture/reasoning behind it or big words that need to be used to explain it. and with paypal, after 60 days, no one can do anything. so it sort of makes it easy for him to just take money and say 'shit, been on tour/been busy'

i'm pretty sure the skaters are living w/o internet access at the moment. i wouldn't be surprised if oftentimes he either never received the money or wasn't able to get the tapes through for whatever reason. from what i hear they're pretty down-and-out and it probably doesn't help that they're in a foreign country.

still really weird tho.

theyre living in new york, but either way, paypal can be accessed through any computer and the funds stay in there.. if the dudes send cash to him or a money order then thats a risk they have to take, but everyone who is complaining that they got ripped off paid through paypal im pretty sure. he still sends tapes regularly to distros too, so there isnt much of an excuse, especially when some people have been waiting over an entire year.

they have been back in the states for a while. it just occured to me this thread title is very appropriate. i got took for fifty bucks and that was like three years ago. a dude i know ordered like over a hundred bucks of what appear now to be imaginary releases. anyway he is still waiting for his stuff. he emails james once in a while and gets responses like "dude, its on the way. ill throw in some extra stuff."

aren't the skaters playing No Fun this year? maybe you guys could show up with a paypal posse...
James is a really nice guy, but after seeing the Skaters 5 times I've gotta say I think they're totally overrated. seems to me like they try to do the exact same thing each time and are less inspired/capable with every show. The couple James solo tapes I've heard sound like he's trying really hard to be Ariel Pink. I'd give the other ones a chance if I got them free, though... they have some of that stuff at Exiled in portland.

I liked Dark Rye Bread when it came out. Nothing since has done anything for me. Seems to all be identical and derivative of that first reasonably compelling missive.
