been enjoying the Denyer & Bell/Saade discs on another timbre recently & although I have a decent Shakuhachi recording collection collection already i'd be interested in any info on discs featuring new music for the instrument on small labels that might have passed my radar undetected !

Shakuhachi is only one of a multitude of instruments on this Emanem release, but is heard to great effect. Clive Bell is the shakuhachi player. Highly recommended.

All of these discs are somewhat less contemporary (or at least less "eai" in aesthetic, but some may be useful:

In addition the recordings he made of the Takemitsu works that involve shakuhachi, Katsuya Yokoyama also played in the late 1970s work Blends for shakuhachi and Moog, with the composer Richard Teitelbaum performing the live electronics. This is now available on New Albion on a disc that includes another later collaboration between the two and Mark Dresser (bass) & Gerry Hemingway (drums).

Several of Ned Rothenberg's CDs, especially his more recent things, include his shakuhachi playing. (Rothenberg studied with Yokoyama, as well as Goro Yamaguchi and Ralph Samuelson)

Phil Gelb has a couple of ongoing collaborations: The Space Between with Pauline Oliveros (accordion), Dana Reason (piano) and guests. They've got a series of three CDs with different bassists (Barre Phillips, Joelle Leandre & Matthew Sperry). Gelb also performs with Chris Brown (electronics & piano) as a duo and as part of the Natto Quartet with Tim Perkis (electronics) & Shoko Hikage (koto). Gelb also ran a label called Sparkling Beatnik that released a lot of cross cultural projects. Gelb studied with Yoshio Kurahashi & Ronnie Nyogetsu Seldin.

Christopher Yohmei Blasdel has a disc of theatrical duos with composer/performer Byron Au Yong, who plays a lot of percussion, er-hu, piano etc on the disc, which is called Breath Play. Blasdel studied with Goro Yamaguchi.

& if the list you have on your blog is all of the shakuhachi recordings you own, you should try to get something by Wasadumi Doso, who was really amazing.

no ! I confess I have quite a lot more than that. I have all but one of the discs mentioned so far, so I guess I should have made it a bit clearer that i'm really looking for info on the newer & small label releases & stuff that's been issued in the last couple of years (when my buying pound has been stretched to so much that I kind of took my eye off the Shakuhachi ball so to speak) - ones that perhaps have very limited distribution but that feature contemporary music for the Shakuhachi.

good to have all these mentioned though - the Gelb discs have some nice bits in particular.

Man if you have over 100 shakuhachi albums you should start an mp3 blog and post nothing but out-of-print shakuhachi music.

ha ! if I had the time....I used to run a distribution company & given the amount of recordings I aquired during that I wonder if I started it for that reason alone ! I'd like to have the time to share lots of the vinyl especially.

if you are ok with jazz, there is a duo album of Yosuke Yamashita with Hozan Yamamoto on Enja. i don't think it's very available, and i haven't heard it myself, but i saw their concert on tv once and have very fond memories of that.

There's a jazz pianist called Steve Cohn who plays the shakuhachi quite well.

I have a bunch of records featuring this instrument.

It's all traditional japanese stuff though.

Nothing contemporary.
