the many faces of james ferraro
the many faces of james ferraro
so whats the deal w/ this dude? ive heard limited amounts of skaters stuff, that self-titled teotihuacan, & nirvana
from what i can tell, he also has tons of aliases/one-off side-projects. what else of his should i check out?
theres something about the music that i cant really compare to anything else ive heard recently. theres this aura of warmth that brings up very acute and intense feelings of nostalgia for me. like, nostalgia of growing up as a kid; late 80s/early 90s tv programming for schoolchildren.
music in technicolor is the easiest way for me to put it

Michael I think you hit the nail on the head here - thats a similar feeling I have to his work. I don't know what releases you've heard but Lamborghini Crystal is worth checking out if you feel this way.Michael wrote:theres something about the music that i cant really compare to anything else ive heard recently. theres this aura of warmth that brings up very acute and intense feelings of nostalgia for me. like, nostalgia of growing up as a kid; late 80s/early 90s tv programming for schoolchildren.
James (and Spencer) are a nightmare - they release under wildly different names each time, low cassette editions and have no presence on the web.
Apparently if you write to them they will send you a catalog, but I don't know their address. Best place to look for releases is volcanic tongue, or fusetron. Failing that, its ebay
The side projects James is/has done (note this probably isn't a full list nor are some of names/titles right - did I also mention half the releases don't have any writing on?)
First of all he's just released 4 new cd-r's - so if you're looking to collect thiese would be your starting point as they're probably still in stock:
Lamborghini Crystal - Roach Motel
Edward Flex presents: Maui Black Out/Liquid Bikini
Skelesand Extra-Earth Morph - Wave Rave pt.1
Liquid Metal - Alternative soundtrack to Digital Overdrive
In the past he'd done:
As: James Ferraro
- alternative soundtrack to screm in blue surf video
- alternative soundtrack to 1983 baseball world series
As Lamborghini Crystal:
- alien microwave
- dial : 747 creepozoid
- little deuce coupe tv dinners
- draco-shop bop vol 1
- demon channels
- vhs radio 1988 ? sky divers request/cyborg chillers
- clock tower acid
- smoking out his majesties ufo
As Nirvana:
? body of consciousness/iguana green wave
- Malanyang Nirvana Safari
Pacific Rat Temple Band - Tan Kim (Boa Paradise)
Splash - slippery beach trash gamelan
As Teotihuacan:
- self titled
- Live Smokeshows From Inside The Ciguri Cave Hazed Diamonds With Windswept Hair
As The Wooden Cupboard:
- boiling the animal in the sky?
? animals speak the spirit tongue
kitchikimaango : documents of native american hertitage studio presents : peyote cactus rituals
peyote way - chiuji cactus juice "energy of the eagle me"
pan als allgot saturnia,1977
pan dolphinic dawn 7"
composition of the sensibilities of melted knowledge - s/t
sky and mirrorbalm in preparation for d?j? vu - s/t
snake figures fan - s/t
arecaceae ? observatory cg 2 & 3 (coconut of teotihuacan)
Obviously this is a massive list, and its probably incomplete.
If I were to recommend my favourites, you should definately check out
alternative soundtrack to scream in blue surf video
lamborghini crystal - smoking out his majestifes ufo
pacific rat temple band - tan kim (boa paradise)
snake figures fan - s/t
composition of the sensibilities of melted knowledge - s/t
the first two particulary are my very favourite things hes done. Definately what you are looking for I think. They'll be hopelessly out of print, though.

Its funny, I wasn't taken by splash at all. Its OK, not his best. Twisted, but not in a good way.arbagegarbage wrote:James newest (well newest in December anyway) project called SPLASH is awesome. I know Fusetron had it at one point, but maybe not anymore.
Robert
Interestingly, tt was released on a new 'label' called Pacific Surveillance Video which like New Age Cassettes is one of their home-brew labels they use to distribute releases. Its apparently also going to release VHS tapes which I'm presonally very excited about. Taking James's music and thinking about it visually, it could relate to something quite exciting
I might be shooting myself in the foot here as I like to buy this stuff too, but could I add another couple of mailorders which regularly stock James Ferraro/Skater-related releases:

oh man.. james' work is MILES deep..
dude pulls off so much shit.. some of his releases are so-so, but.. man.. he puts out SO SO SO much stuff and a lot of recent stuff has been so twisted and solid..
for sure your list of his projects is incomplete. he's put out a million tapes..
I know I've got an oldie called "cruising the night biker strip" that's a winner..
uhhhhhhhh.. for contact/ordering.. try iguanacity at gmail

that night biker strip is a rare one indeed, seen it on ebay once or twice, too much for my pocket....its pre-skaters, never heard it but I bet it jams...

yeah.. as a dude who's toured the US A LOT.. there's NO MONEY on the west coast, the drives on the west coast are awful.. the drive from the midwest to the west coast is worse and the turnouts in most west coast cities for these bands are terrible..
I think lambsbread came out here once with majik markers.. probably ten folks were out.... they probably each got paid $20.. AWESOME. makes the drive from Minneapolis worth it.
plus skaters and monosov were both west coast bands for forever and no one really gave a shit until they left.. go figure.

there's a tape from a year ago :
Lamborghini Crystal 1992 Cool Runnings
( i think? cause like that guy said, no info in the tapes...)
anyways its one of the best. catchy psych. i think the cover is a dude with aviators?
check soulseek or something.
there are two songs on the Alien Microwaves CDR that kill. in the same vein as the tape i just mentioned.
and that 'scream in blue surf' tape really hits the spot. foamy. maybe he made it in the bath tub. i liked it a lot more in the past month than when i got it , but i see no reason why not to like it right off the bat
you can sometimes find this stuff on Tomentosa as well
