Graham Lambkin

I'm not an expert on Mr. Lambkin's work, but am starting this thread for three reasons:

1) I heard Salmon Run for the first time last night (not sure how I missed it for this long), and really enjoyed it, one of the most exciting discs I've heard in the last year (it was a summer 2007 release). I'm hoping to stock these at ErstDist in the near future.

2) his duo with Jason Lescalleet, The Breadwinner, will be released on Jason's label next month.

3) there will be a record release show in NYC on May 24:

Bhob Rainey/Jason Lescalleet
nmperign/Sean Meehan
Graham Lambkin/Jason Lescalleet

I'm pretty sure that will be Graham's first live appearance of any kind since 2003, so pretty exciting.

anyway, discussion of any of those or any of his other projects (the Shadow Ring, Tart, etc.) is welcome.

the duo with lescalleet is really good news, have you heard any of it ? Salmon Run was indeed a really good recording and somewhat surprising for me since i was expecting more abstract elements to be used, still scratching the surface on that. It was also my entry point to The Shadow Ring

don't know anything about Tart. suggestions?

no, I haven't heard the duo yet, Jason is sending me an advance right after he sends it to the plant in the next couple of weeks.

as far as i know there are only a few tart releases, all on swill radio or pineapple tapes. i've heard at least one of the lps, but it felt more like a scott foust thing than lambkin-led. for what that's worth, i still certainly enjoyed it. also his contributions to at least one idea fire company record were good.

i've been re-obsessed with the shadow ring since salmon run hit my ears, but i haven't had much luck with the earlier stuff i need. waxwork echoes slipped out of my fingers on ebay, and the city lights lp i haven't seen in years.

City Lights is usually considered the best (and I love it) but their first LP "It puts the music in its coffin" is my favorite.

"city lights" is usually considered the best by whom? i've always heard "put the music in its coffin" (no leading 'it', put the lotion away) named as primary, but it's a little too songform for me, i'm closer attached to the broken story-scapes of the the first two swill radio lps.

i'm thinking we had a shadow ring thread now, let me find a link.

Salmon Run was on my best of '07 list, and it was an easy call. In terms of The Shadow Ring, I haven't heard all of the pre-Swill Radio work, but the Swill Radio work is excellent. I'd put "Lighthouse" among my all-time favorite works.

It was good to learn (via another thread here) about the Signal to Noise feature on Lambkin (issue #48, Winter 2008). I had known almost nothing about him 'til this appeared.

there's a great interview with Graham and also Darren (of The Shadow Ring) in The Sound Projector issue 14. There's also an Idea Fire Company piece in there. There's a separate thread for a radio special I am doing on The Shadow Ring this Friday Feb 1. It will be a good overview of their career.

I reread both the Signal to Noise and Sound Projector pieces last night, and FWIW, I found the Signal to Noise one far more interesting. definitely recommended!

it's kind of amazing to me that Salmon Run is an edition of 300 and still not sold out yet. I'm getting some copies for sale this week, excited about that (primarily since I've been listening to MP3s so far myself).

i highly recommend "lindus". its my favorite along with hold onto i.d. and the first lp. get it soon though cause according to the swill radio site they are down to their last copies and its never been on cd.

Add another voice to the choir for "Put The Music In its Coffin." I like the Lovecraft inspired lyrics on it.

I remember the Shadow Ring interview in Muckraker #7 being kind of cool.

on salmon run, public domain classical samples, creaks, giggles, etc. it's sparse and haunted, impeccably assembled (this is coming from someone who normally has very little tolerance for field recordings). I think there's a sample on the mimaroglu site...

I haven't really got my head around this release yet, seems to unfold new things. The giggling borders on hysteria at times. Can anyone pick out what the longest part of the classical samples is, some sort of sonata?

any further words on salmon run? i only know shadow ring's "lighthouse" and some assorted bits. a duo with lescalleet sounds very intriguing and a bit odd.

how pumped is bhob to be on a bill with lambkin?
