just wanted to add that i completely agree on these two points, so that why i quoted them. dilloway is the best thing to ever happen to WE.

so, could someone recommend me some dilloway stuff, bearing in mind i've not enjoyed any of the 4/5 albums i heard by wolf eyes or seeing them live?

I have heard his "Fowl" and "Sugar Colt" tapes are rad but I haven't heard them yet.

i drink your skin is a single cassette, quam.

also, boggs vol. 2 is something of a collection, and it features my single favorite dilloway solo track, 'appalling and alive'. originally a 7" on chondritic.

I'm a bit surprised to see something like that on vinyl because of it's nature - I'm guessing it would be called harsh noise - because the dynamic range of that type of music. Usually it intentionally involves decibels above 0 and much clipping. It's my understanding that vinyl won't allow much clipping because of the way it is played. How are harsh noise musicians like Dilloway putting out vinyl releases?

amusingly enough, that was a typo, i should have put 3". meaning a cd. but two of dilloway's more recent release have been vinyl.

i would not characterize aaron dilloway, or wolf eyes, as harsh noise, though. far from it, in fact. though i can't really speak about how they master their records.

As far as I know, vinyl affords a greater dynamic range than CD or digital formats. With digital recording technology, zero is a ceiling or a cut-off point. With Analog recording, the zero point is where distortion begins. For example: with a reel-to-reel tape machine, you can run your signal into it as hot as you want and only get more and more distorted or swampy. Think of 'Search & Destroy' by Iggy and the Stooges for an example of tape distortion benefiting the recorded results. With regards to how something sounds when it ends up on vinyl, playback distortion would influenced by the recording and mastering processes.

CD's can represent the spectrum of a dynamic range more accurately, due to the lack of surface noise, but vinyl can theoretically represent frequencies much higher in the spectrum. Due to a 'aliasing' CD's can only represent half of their 44.1 khz , so therefore nothing beyond 22.5 khz will be present. Even if one records at a higher resolution, it still has to be dithered down to end up on a CD.

yeah, what joda said. you can distort/clip the crap out of something at the recording/mixing stage, but then you can master it at whatever volume for vinyl. i know years back, there was that flying saucer attack cd that said it couldn't be mastered properly for vinyl, but i think that had something to do with the phase difference in the left and right sides? quick googling reveals that a mono mix "corrected" the problem.

I used to be pretty good friends with those guys and really can't get into any of their recordings as WE. For me, the live experience defines them as a band and everything else is disposable.

I am patient and will listen again at some point with fresh ears.

I think the general mass of Wolf Eyes side projects have become much more interesting than the band itself is anymore. Stick to either pre-2005 Wolf Eyes or Demons, Graveyards, Dilloway solo/Spine Scavenger, and all that weirdness.

The two recent Heldon things reissued on Wah Wah are surprisingly great. Allez Teia something and Electronique Guerilla. I've never felt his later stuff much.

Nate Young's solo work almost all seems outstanding to me. All the Demons stuff, plus the Regression album. All of it is solid gold.

Wow.. all of this Dilloway talk and it seems like people are more impressed with his older work.. which.. IMO is good, but doesn't even begin to touch on what he's been doing the last few years. My top Diloway releases are all recent, including:

Chain Shot
Infinite Lucifer
Door with No Handle

The Nevari Butchers and Spine Scavenger projects are also pretty interesting but I really prefer the above records.

as far as Wolf Eyes.. I like a lot of work those dudes have done solo and as a group but my favorite WE records will probably always be Dread and Mugger.
