I don't know about maRi's broad generalization , but I took her specific point as wondering if any genres were spared Dohol's reaction. Personally I can't think of any identifiable musical genres that show a notably different historical arc/fade-away than jazz, so I too am puzzled by a reaction of sadness, insofar as one would be sad about the effect of time's passage on every single identifiable musical genre (and boy, that's a lotta sad). Of course one could feel jazz suffered more than others, but it's not something I observe myself.

Yes, many other genres follow a similar arc, but genuine sadness comes not just from loss, but the loss of something you love. But life goes on. The world is full of wonderful things to fill all but the deepest void.
But this is neither here nor there I gave up on jazz years ago.

Oh jazz, David S. Ware and associates, William Parker and associates, Cecil Taylor when he lays off of the vocalizing. I think that they do a good job of adding to the lexicon, if not reworking the basic grammar, of the area of music in which they play. Except for when they wind up in the "Thirsty Ear" series on Blue Note, which is a badly misconceived stab at, what, fusion? Bad music?

The only thing I come up with spontaneously then is John Zorn's Masada-Quartet. That jazz-band impressed me - but only for a couple of weeks, and more than ten years ago.
... okay... I remember one particular track on MySpace by a british group called Polar Bear I found amazing (but it really was only that one track)... it was the freshest and most intelligent 21th century-jazz-stuff I heard for a long time.

I saw his quartet with Tristan Honsinger, Han Bennink and an Icelandic bass player. I was about six feet to Han's left and was blown away. As long as 70's Zoot Sims is getting a look in,why not add 'Warm Tenor' to the list. Don't know if this has been mentioned with regard to Oliver Lake, but Clevont Fitzhubert is a fantastic album.
I've only recently discovered those Air albums (specifically Song,Raid and Lore). They've probably been the music that's made the biggest impact on me this year.
