Funnily enough I think that sums up what's appealing about Malfatti's music sometimes.

I'm not sure about Rain Speak. It's easier to like than the rest of his recent output, but I also think it's less sui generis. You would of course recognise it as Malfatti but is the most Feldmanesque thing he's done (recently? ever?) IMO. When the strings sound, they are in that wavering-between-identifiable-clusters-of-contiguous-tones mode , with those ponticello harmonics on them. Other recent Malfatti is a lot more alien, inhuman, dry, unintiuitive, as has already been pointed out. Not sure I like those more, or even admire those more than Rain Speak... but then again I can't quite identify what I get out of M's music.

yeah, I almost posted something like this also. the composed piece of his that I've connected with the most (by far, probably) is the first disc of 'raku sugifatti', and on that, the silences become impossible to ignore, they carry so much weight and tension that I become unable to listen as background music, which is exceedingly rare for any music that I listen to and a pretty interesting phenomenon to me. I think the reason this one resonates with me so much is that I feel that the amounts of sound and silence are perfectly balanced, too much of either and this tension would largely dissipate.

Rasputina - Cabin Fever

About every 3 years I go through a strange "14-year old goth girl" phase. It's not something I'm especially proud of but it usually only lasts about a week. This is one of those albums I listen to when in such a phase. It's a kinda fun album.

oh man, i had my eye on this in the AQ catalogue, but decided against because i have low to middling recollections of the 'bombay the hard way' comp series.

is it safe to hope this is way better?

infinitely better.

edit: if you go to their site, they have some reviews including a rave review from jonny trunk of trunk records pretty much saying they are completely essential, which was definitely my impression.

Personally I like The Kings and Queens of Bollywood better than either compilation, but only slightly. Both are incredibly good and a hell of a good time.

I'm specially delighted with the music in the blue notes one. I've read about Chris McGregor, but never got to hear it until this one. Prety good, got it yesterday from the church.
