Christian Wolff - Ten Exercises [New World Records, 2006]

Natacha Diels (flute), Garrett List (trombone), Larry Polansky (guitars, mandolin), Michael Riessler (bass clarinet), Frederic Rzewski (piano), Robyn Schulkowsky (percussion), Chiyoko Szlavnics (sop. sax), Christian Wolff (piano, melodica, percussion)

Fantastic recordings of Wolff's exercises (in which he plays himself in groups of varying sizes). Difficult to describe, really, sitting somewhere between composition and improvisation; each musician has the same music, but can choose to read as much or as little as they like. Fascinating listen the first time through, with single melody-type lines emerging now and again. Rzewski's solo and the various duets and smaller group pieces are particularly good.

yeah, if i remember well, the first song on this album is just heartbreaking. i usually only like a few songs on each tindersticks-album, but those songs i really do like a lot.
