Good thread, will definitely chase up some of these.

Regarding the distribution of Ocora, from what I hear, they're not the easiest label to distribute. They're like a seriously hardcore university press, they've got not idea about promoting the catalogue as a whole.

The government funding has created an astonishing body of work, but from what I understand they're pretty difficult people to deal with. They've probably got loads of OOP stuff sitting around in cupboards somewhere.

I can't say I'm a fan because I've always found Lyrichord releases hard to get...(but then again I haven't searched them out..I think I need to correct that)

The bulk of my listening has been Ocora, King, Nonesuch Explorer, and Smithsonian Folkways..

And various other odd labels..

Wow interesting, I've never seen any of those before. I don't expect that they would be too easy to find in Europe sadly :(

Wouldn't expect so. I did find one in australia, but the other ones I have came from the US.

Another rule to live by with this stuff- any museum or university issued collection in this area is worth checking out, no matter how inoccous the subject matter seems, or whatever preconcieved notions you might have of the music of that area/ people.

This is one of my favorites. Anyone interested in cumbia should definitely check this out...Bullerengue is kind of like pre-cumbia, and Pertrona Martinez was a master

Downloading the big 3LP anthology of Chadian music right now, will report back
