Experimental music should be something that suggests a way of organizing your thinking, your attitude toward the world, which suggests that the world could be different.

the new Josef Anton Riedl double CD compilation on Edition RZ.

I just started this, and like most RZ double CDs, it's a 2 1/2 hour epic, so the jury is still out on the music within. but in an era of fading quality control standards, Edition RZ is a continued source of inspiration, both for their music and for their design. their design aesthetic is so simple, but somehow so captivating and attractive. the picture of the Riedl on the RZ site doesn't even come close to doing justice to the actual color of the package, which is a flourescent light red with silver writing.

Just discovered the music of Pierre Berthet via the Sub Rosa website. Instrument builder/inventor, percussionist, former Arnold Dreyblatt drummer, etc. Really great stuff.

Wombatz wrote:Ordered the Bombax Bombax Akiyama, Carlsson, Nakamura, Olsson. Somehow I got psyched about this when it was mentioned on ihm, don't ask me why exactly, everybody seemed pleased but somewhat mildly. Just a hopelessly tangled combination of personal nerve triggers, I guess (like: this time Akiyama will play exactly what I want from him, I'm somehow sure, the others will do him good, he'll go nowhere near Baileyisms or the boogie; it's only an edition of 165 and I have one of them worldwide so I can put myself on some sort of pedestal; my 3-year-old watched Pippi Longstocking the other night and after 5 minutes got so scared by the bumbly policemen who wanted to put her into a ward that he asked us to quickly switch it off), that somehow made me drool and gave me a flashback to the times when I hunted down Flying Nun vinyl as a teen (pre-internet, today, where is the pain?).

Think I won't play it before the new year, it's been a time since objecthood in music hit home and once I'm face to face with the audio I'll forget about the object.
Such silliness didn't survive ripping the envelope open. I love it, the Swedish contingent seem to keep things very down to earth. Not much lateral thinking going on, they kind of work more like in a band, where everyone has a distinct role to fill. Which maybe somewhat limits the scope, but I really didn't want it to go anywhere else. Rocks.

I'm finally having a computer I can watch DVDs with. Now playing is a Sonic Youth gig from 1985, back in the days when the only properly tuned pitched-instrument on stage was Kim Gordon's bass. And what a beauty she is, by the way.

SST saved my life back in '85 ( we won't mention their seedy business practices, will we? )

That is a great album..

Fantastic! I just can't believe some of it... definitely up there, for me, this year.

By the way, I've done all my CD shopping for the year and I'm not going to be getting anything new until 2010 so when is an acceptable time for lists to be made and announced? I always find them really interesting and useful...
