Eleven Clouds
June

100 Black Kites

100 Black Kites, the June entry in the Eleven Clouds project, is a single box of filled with anonymous instances of ephemera. While we are not at liberty to disclose explicit details w/r/t the contents rest assured that amongst these objects are mediums for the transmission of sound. Of course the recipient of this set is free to reveal whatever details they wish, though of course they may also choose to preserve the uncertainty. The actions of the owner of this piece is an integral part of the process.

How to acquire a copy
100 Black Kites is a unique object of which only one (1) exists and thus is available for only one (1) individual. This single copy will be sent out, at the artists expense, to the individual who best expresses why they should be the one to receive it. You may send your arguments to the below email address, making sure to include where you'd like the box sent if your argument proves the most persuasive. There is no deadline for this, the box will be sent out once the artist is convinced to do so and not before. That is to say he will not just pick from amongst the entries received at a specific time, but will wait for the most compelling regardless of how long that takes. That being said timeliness in sending your entry is recommended.

The discs and "booklet" for 100 Black Kites.

So I'm thinking that perhaps we came across a little heavy in the above PR w/r/t the level of convincing needed to be selected as the recipient for this release. It is not at all the case that a brief worthy of the supreme court is required! For example the best entry so far is a single sentence. So please feel free to send off whatever, it certainly can't hurt. Also we realize that while it would be rewarding to have this box just appear unexpectedly that there are those who would prefer not to email out their address for (potentially) no reason. So feel free to just email your argument to us and if you are selected we will email you back to inform you of your selection and then issues of a mailing address can be taken care of. Of course if you do appreciate the notion of this possibly just arriving unexpectedly you can of course include the desired address for it to be shipped to.

Anyway I hope that this increases interest a bit, as this release most certainly should be experience by someone, ideally the exactly right someone. The music here is among the most (if not the most) challenging of the Eleven Clouds series so far and strays into pretty different territory. In combination with the carefully crafted contents of the box there is a lot to explore and engage with.

Eleven Clouds
July

Image

A Closed Letter

A Closed Letter, the July entry in the Eleven Clouds project, is a 3" cd-r presented a vinyl pocket highlighting the above image. The recording contained herein utilizes an expansion of the network used in the previous installments. This network, pictured below, expands the amount of nodes, effectors and connections. It is in fact not too far from the example network in this article. though featuring several different nodes and a couple less interfaces. As far as Network Instrument theory goes, this network is fairly highly connected and features multiple sub-networks (a concept which will be covered in further articles). This expanded network leads to a fairly complex sound, with layers of interacting elements, that shift around the stereo field, sounds coming in and out, affected, mutated and interpenetrating other sounds. This of course is the crux of the network theory; interacting instruments which through interpenetration transcend their constituant elements. This piece thus serves as a concise example of a network instrument.

Eleven Clouds
August

47° 32' 25.80" N / 121° 54' 32.0" W, the August entry in the Eleven Clouds project, is a single microcassete containing a live recording that took place next to a river in the Cascade foothills in Washington State, USA. For the purposes of this recording the artist used a Gakken SX-150 analog synthesizer, an iPhone running the Oscillator app and recorded simultansouly on a voice memo recorder and a microcassette recorder. Additional sounds were generated using rocks, water and other natural elements in the environment. The primary piece, a thirty minute long improvisation with the aforementioned elements takes up the entire A Side of the cassette. An additional ~15 minute recording was made on the B Side that includes an intro and outro section with the Oscillator app bracketing a performance of Christian Wolff's Stones. A singular entry in the Eleven Clouds sequence, this piece uses several disparete sound sources with a natural mixing element, recorded on primitive devices that add their own sound to the mix.

How to acquire a copy

47° 32' 25.80" N / 121° 54' 32.0" W are the GPS coorinates of the location of where this piece was recorded and where the sole copy of said recording resides. This copy is available to the first individual who recovers it from this location. The album cover art is a picture of the location where it is hidden: in a depression among those tree roots with the rock put in to mark the location. The recording was made under a bridge, on a stream and is thus easily accessible by car, as well as by bicycle (which is how the artist got there). The finder of this piece is free to contact us as to inform us it has been found, or they may of course keep the information to themselves. They are of course free to transcribe the tape and make it available in a digital form, or to keep it just for themselves, secretly. In the spirit of geocaching if after a period of time if the recording has not be found it will be removed.

As an aid to locating the recording, several more pictures of the site have been made available and can be viewed in a variety of sizes here.

Since there is just this one copy of this release and the 'b side' is a "bonus track" it was decided to put that up onto SoundCloud so that people could check it out. This track as stated above is an ~15 minute recording that includes an intro and outro section with the Oscillator app bracketing a performance of Christian Wolff's Stones.

Eleven Clouds

September

Image

Fugue State

Fugue State, the September entry in the Eleven Clouds project, is a 43' CD-R packaged in a vinyl pocket. This conceptual process piece was created in the following way. Utilizing his persona on the i hate music electronic message board the artist initiated a thread on the subject of improvisation in 2010 (for which, see here). While a participant in this thread it was of course allowed to proceed normally and after several days it had generated several pages of responses. The first page, plus one post, of responses were then collected into a text file with minimal editing (primarily web addresses were changed into text) which was then read aloud utilizing the OS X "Alex" voice and recorded to a file. The resultant audio file was used to create a source audio file which contained silences corresponding to the amount of time in between posts (scaled to 1 minute = 1 second). This new file was burned to CD-R and was played in the worlds cheapest compact disc player, through a very cheap FM transmitter, captured by a nearby FM radio (also cheap) and fed into a Nord Micro Modular. The patch the Micro Modular was running (pictured below) was designed to radically transform input, particularly frequency modulated input and patterns of speech. While any text run through this system would lead to similar sound, the pace, feel and structure of this piece depend on the source material. In this way the twelve people who participated in this thread up to the cut-off point can be thought of as collaborators in this piece.

Fugue State is released in an addition of twelve (12) and is available only to the collaborators on the project. If you are one of the twelve people who participated in the State of Improvisation 2010 thread between 1:29 on September 8th and 7:12 on September 9th please send you mailing address to the electronic mail address below.

The complete edition of Fugue State, ready to be mailed out. One thing that's changed w/r/t this release is that we are now going to wait until the end of the month before mailing these out. All of the discs will then be mailed out to the collaborators that have contacted us before October 2nd 2010. Any remaining discs will be sent out first come, first serve to any board member who have contacted us by that date (10.02.10). If you'd like to be placed in a list for any remaining discs (and there are sure to be several) send an email to mgmt AT hollowearthrecordings DOT com.

Eleven Clouds

October

Image

Sometimes the rain is hard to see (9 haiku)

Sometimes the rain is hard to see (9 haiku), the October entry in the Eleven Clouds project, are nine (9) individually handcrafted artifacts each one containing a singular piece of music. The culmination of several months of effort that began with a process that turns a haiku into a performable score, the selection of nine haiku (plus two), the creation of each score using brush and ink on rice paper, the recording of the score over a month (specific weather conditions were required), the editing and selection from among the takes of the most representative of each score, the development of the envelopes from rice paper which necessitated that they be bound by hand, the re-painting of the score onto the packaging, the creation of the labels, the preparing and burning of the cd-rs and finally the tying of the ribbon. Each one of this bespoke edition are unique from the score, to the music, to the packaging and each reflects this individuality. The music is a record of the artists explorations of the prepared wire strung with each recording utilizing a single technique, preparation or gesture. The score calls for the pieces to be performed out of doors (or the outdoors brought indoors) which makes for a varied accompaniment that is of course different session to session.

How to acquire a copy

Sometimes the rain is hard to see (9 haiku) is released in an addition of nine (9), each one a unique recording, in handmade packaging featuring the score performed within. In acknowledging the handcrafted aspect of this project these releases will be offered in trade for an item of your own making. Said item could be anything of your own creation that you are willing to mail out in trade: a handwritten poem, short story, a sketch, a piece of music, a fifty-ton cor-ten steel sculpture, a score of your own devising, a DVD, a 17 foot hand knitted scarf, a watercolor, or anything else that you have made yourself. Simply send electronic mail to the address below before November 12th stating your desire to trade for one of these and if one of the first nine to respond, you will be contacted with mailing information. All copies will be mailed out Saturday, November 13th; copies not claimed in trade will be mailed out randomly to previous Eleven Cloud recipients.

Eleven Clouds

November

Image

...and yet

...and yet, the November entry in the Eleven Clouds project, is also the final entry in this nearly year long project. As befits its ultimate status in this particular project it is released as an edition of eleven (11). This release is the most enigmatic release of them all of which nothing more, I'm afraid, can be said.

How to acquire a copy

Just ask.

An image from the ...and yet session. Which BTW is still available. This recording features the first use of the Doepfer Pocket Control which let me tell you has been revelatory. Here's a clearer view of the patch used for the Nord MicroModular for which 16 parameters are directly controllable by the Pocket Control.

(03) Vertical Landscapes 1-5/aeolian electrics (March 2010, Painting with 2x5" cd-r.)

(07) A Closed Letter (July 2010, 3" cd-r.)
(08) 47° 32' 25.80" N / 121° 54' 32.0" W (August 2010, micro-c60.)
(09) Fugue State (September 2010, 5"cd-r.)
(10) Sometimes the rain is hard to see (9 haiku) (October 2010, mini-cd-r.)
(11) ...and yet (November 2010.)

Pictured above is the complete Eleven Clouds. A confession: throughout the course of the project, even as limited as each release was, one copy was held back for the archive†. Said archive is pictured above. This was done with the intention that this archive would end up in the hands of a single individual, so there would be one person, beyond the artist, with all of the releases†. It has been decided that the complete† Eleven Clouds Archive will be sent to a randomly selected individual who has inquired after the final Eleven Clouds release ...and yet. That release, as stated in the press release, is available to any who ask and from that list a single person shall be selected to receive not only ...and yet but the entire Eleven Clouds Archive‡.

As of the writing of this post there are still copies of ...and yet available. So strike while the iron is hot! However all people who inquire after this release, including those that exceed the number of available copies will be entered in the drawing for the complete archive. So there is absolutely no reason not to take the plunge. This offer is open to anyone worldwide with no restrictions including previous recipients of other Eleven Clouds releases‡.

Send your inquires to: mgmt AT hollowearthrecordings DOT com

--
† Caveats
1) Of course there is only one real copy of100 Black Clouds, a unique puzzle box filled with undisclosed objects. However this archive includes the music, presented in the same four disc format of the original release. It has been housed in a vinyl pocket with a photo of the original release
2) Likewise 47° 32' 25.80" N / 121° 54' 32.0" W really only exists as a microcassette buried on a riverbank (perhaps) in the Cascade Foothills. In this case the archive contains the simultaneous recording that was made with a voice recorder. Again a custom sleeve was generated with the promotional artwork.
3) The pictured Vertical Landscape is not the one included in the archive. The archive version is Vertical Landscapes 1 which had been wrapped up securely in brown paper for its journey to the east and was not unwrapped for this photo.

‡ Additional Caveats
A list has been kept of who has received which release for the entire project. If the winner of the archive has previously acquired Eleven Clouds releases said releases will be excluded from the archive as sent to them. These releases will be randomly sent to other recipients of ...and yet who of course also do not already own said release.

Hot off the wire:

...and yet is now OOP except of course for the one copy in the Eleven Clouds Archive. The drawing for the archive will be held on Sunday December 5th and all remaining copies of Eleven Clouds releases will be mailed out in the following week. Of course anyone is still free to enter into the drawing, see the previous post for details.

Now that this project has reached its conclusion and is out of print, assessments and reflections are appropriate. Mr. Milazzo, known to some here for his writing on Bagatellen, has recently conducted an email question and answer session with Mr. Kirkpatrick w/r/t the Eleven Clouds project. This session covers a lot of ground and delves into quite a few of the concerns and ideas behind the project. While not by any means a complete deconstruction of the project it is the best place to begin for anyone interested in the whys and wherefores. This question and answer session has been published on the Drunken Boat internet concern and can be found here: Eleven Questions RE: Eleven Clouds.

In honor of Mr. John Cage's centenary year the April entry, Mid-Spring (rock, breath 12kHz), of the Eleven Clouds releases has been made available for download. Additionally a 'weblog' entry has been created that discusses some previously undisclosed aspects of the project including an except from the unpublised No Ideas But In Things essay and the cleartext of the cypher used to "promote" this release. An opportunity for those who were unable to acquire this piece to listen to it and examine the corresponding material.
