My new Klangschaft is a meditation on a poem:

https://soundcloud.com/konrath-a/lethal-adherence

Hol ich Dich niemals wieder her.
Für uns gibt es kein Morgen.

Der Wind singt Dir ein lautes Lied
Und wiegt dich wild. Nein,
Wirft Dich hin und her,
Als tanzt ihr beide zügellos.

A brief piece done using ableton live 9 and a behringher controller keyboard. I've tried to mix pop melodies with concrete sounds and various noises. Any comment is welcome.

Great!
Is it live?
I found the computer use noises to be a little distracting on first listen, but by the end they sounded very deliberate, so now I'm not sure about my assumptions. At some point I was a little vary of process oriented listening because of them and that made me question the dynamic evolution of the sine waves. And that structure is, on second listen, very well thought out to my ears. Maybe I need to learn how to listen more openly on first exposure.

Your field recording selection and use is impressive to me because I often find music with those ingredients invoke that urban journalist/sound art documentarist feel, which I don't like. And I'm very happy when someone is able to use them successfully, I certainly can't.

Thanks for sharing.

I also liked your last composition, that's some sweet classic winamp action.

StrikeSlip Track (improv/graphic composition)

Post by prof_lofi »

This was an improvised session (very short) made using an improvised score derived from a photograph found in the venue we were rehearsing in:

https://billthompson.bandcamp.com/track/strike-slip-ex1

The track uses live electronics plus field recordings and is a
short work from what will be a 45 minute work.

I thought it came out OK and hope whoever might hear this (if there's anyone here anymore?) enjoys it...

i'm curious if this is composed or live as well?
it's interesting how as these kind of sounds have activity surrounding them they lose a lot of their non objective value you might try to naturally read into them as they're really ambiguous sounds by themselves. i still don't find much about the sounds to be directly social with but because of that it'll become an expression related to the artist and his narrative in choosing those sounds i think.

but maybe that's just me projecting some shit.
anway here's a song i made yesterday

Not sure I understand 'be directly social with' correctly, is the context a listening framework you use or is it meant literally?
I like that you also picked up on those sounds. Not sure what answer I'm hoping for, but looking forward to it.

Which of the songs did you make yesterday? I'm listening to Reverse, but I'm a little busy so I'll have to get back to the rest later. Just the other day I started working on sound material that had lots of artefacts after avoiding it for years. I was thinking, maybe it's been present in bad recordings for enough time for it now to be used deliberately without drawing too much negative focus. Like how you have to wait a certain time before you can joke about a tragedy, haha.
Reverse is a fun work, I like it.

what i was saying was that the sounds have a very ambiguous source of value as they have a timbre that doesn't clearly directly relate to some kind of memory i have. as in with some sounds you'll hear the sound as connected to an object. the sound of water dropping you connect it to a picture of fluids of some kind. or if you hear any word you'll connect the word to some history you've developed with the sound or picture so that you can represent meaning. i think it's interesting how the kind of sounds used in the track i was talking about have a nonobjective approach to my history (social input) with the way i intuit into value immediately to the the sounds but then i wondered if they don't have a truly nonobjective value to them as these sounds, while obviously minimal and reserved, are being used in a clear way which develops a narrative about what the artist intended for them. so now they sounds represent something and aren't nonobjective.
pretty sure i'm rambling big time ow haha

oh and i made reverse a day before i made my post and every other track i made after i posted here. i dunno the exact dates on them :P but thanks for listening!

this is a 'composed' piece, or 'live' in studio. field recording was done years ago, sine wave and pitch shifting were done the day i posted.

sorry for late reply.

by 'be directly social with' i mean that the way i find meaning in the sounds isn't so much in relation to a history i have with that kind of sound. like how when you hear a bird in a tsunoda record or whatever you connect it to a picture of a bird and recognize that as its source. i can tell the sounds in that piece are field recordings directly but they're ambiguous enough that i can't connect them immediately to a picture of 'reality'. i think the sine waves and field recordings next to each other might be part of why i feel this struggle since they are basically an antithesis of each other.

anyway reverse i made the day i posted and everything else came out about a week after. btw i def don't consider any of these songs finished because after listening a few times i want to crop parts out. is it still improv if i do that haha

i find compression artifacts really strange. the notion of 'digital entropy' is really fascinating.

im also sorry it took me forever to respond : x
