Re: I Hate Demos / Today's Improv/Composition
Hi everyone,
I've just finished a new work and am uncertain which labels would be best to approach for a release. I'm not new to the field but even so, I've never been very knowledgeable about labels etc.
Anyway, to complicate it, this piece is quite different from much of my past work, making it even harder to classify.
Here's a link to the first 8 or so minutes (it goes on for close to 40, with about 4 or so more distinct sections):
https://soundcloud.com/billthompson/bil ... ce-excerpt
Any suggestions very welcome,
Thanks,
Bill Thompson

Re: I Hate Demos / Today's Improv/Composition
Hi Bill,
Congrats on finishing a new work, that's always a good feeling.
I'm not very knowledgable about labels, but I remember hearing things on the same alley on Hibernate. The owner seems like a friendly guy. Pardon if you're looking for a bigger one, the typical one would be Type I guess?
Also, if you're not done mixing yet, the feedback in the neighbourhood of a high g at the beginning went a little distractingly loud on my headphones. My reference ones broke so it might well be their fault. The melody is a good intro, it reminds me of successful max/msp sessions and that always makes me happy. I'd like to hear more, so let us know when it gets a home.
Good luck!

Great! I feel like I've been on an adventure after listening to that.snailed wrote:https://soundcloud.com/abrash_recs/stev ... salton-sea

I really appreciate the way you've treated the sounds to work better in a long track. You could have made it muddier, but I'm glad you didn't.
Rant:
At about halfway through there's some parts with a monotone, distorted, frequency modulated and echoed voice that reminds me of a sound that was used in some places in a game called battlefield 3 by Dice. In there, I think it was mean to be used as a comm-chatter kind of background that fps games sometimes go for in menues, but to me they felt like it was the kind of voices you'd half hear while falling asleep. On Marathon by Kayo Dot, there's a similar sound repeating, gradually eq'd away, that whole album is already quite dreamy, so maybe that's where I got it from. I thought maybe it reminded me of the comfort you get when listening to I am sitting in a room, or something like that. I can't decide whether or not it sounds like that to me because I've used that game and Choirs of the Eye to relax after long working days, or if I chose the sounds because they were relaxing. Anyway, it's a great sound to be used in the way you do. Not easy either, makes me want to work on my dynamic and masking skills.
Re: I Hate Demos / Today's Improv/Composition
Hey, thanks Moon!
Do you mean the bird sounds in the middle? (They're highly processed, so they might not sound like birds). Either way, that's interesting. If it's the sound I'm thinking of, there were about 200 birds sitting in a field right before sunset near the Salton Sea. All of a sudden, they all spontaneously started squawking and flew away at the same time. It was an incredible site/sound and I'm lucky to have caught it on tape.

Re: I Hate Demos / Today's Improv/Composition
I was about to write about how strange it is that I found those birds to sound like voices when they clearly don't on focused listening, but as I was listening again I found the voices I was thinking of around the twenty minute mark. So not halfway at all!
Interesting stuff. I give it another listen now and it describes the area in a really detailed, odd way. Except I've only a quick google image search to go by. So close to being creepy, but never goes there, so it just stays in exactly the place you put it. That might just be me, most people I know ascribes creepy to anything with high pitched hums..

Re: I Hate Demos / Today's Improv/Composition
That's pretty much exactly what I was going for-- I didn't find the place "creepy" at all. It's certainly more than that.
It's one of these places in America that seems like it had everything going for it, and now it's just completely... nothing. Broken businesses, a deserted yacht club, an RV park that was swept away by a flood. I don't find that creepy. Maybe it works as a symbol of certain parts of America now for me.
Then a few miles away you have this thing called Salvation Mountain. It's this beautiful manmade mountain sculpture built by one guy. It says Jesus all over the thing, but the guy is actually fairly open minded and it works in a secular way, too. It's certainly an achievement.

The whole thing works on a few levels for me, but maybe hard to articulate in words. Anywhere where you could have the ruins of Bombay Beach next to something like Salvation Mountain is pretty inspiring to me, and hopefully I got some of that across in the piece.

Re: I Hate Demos / Today's Improv/Composition
I put Clair de Lune in well-tuned tuning on an fm synth I really like. Such a tumblr thing to do.
But it's fun, that kind of minimal effort transformation web 2.0 #yolo stuff

all of the threads here seem oddly specific, is there no general 'community' thread/subforum?
this is my track on a split i did recently

What did you use to achieve this barberpole-like continuous falling down?
EDIT:
I live in the midwest, I toured the East Coast and played a few shows on the way there and the way back. Here is an improv I did towards the end. Everything was super last minute and none of it rehearsed, everything live. I'm really happy with how it came out.

I'm trying to find an hour each day to record songs like these, short length guitar + drum machine earfuck, with no more than 4 lines of lyrics
