You're right, the 2005 cover threw me off.

fade-in, during which the piano emerges into the left foreground, then fade-out except the (possibly overdubbed) piano which then awkwardly attempts a transition into the next track at c. 1:40

thanks! that's really interesting in its boringness, the only way out of the basic set-up but not part of it, and the only aspect of the piece that's not radical at all.

here's something more bonkers, a fade-out on laughter put through echo and delay effects (you can read that as a steve reich reference) as a delightfully silly illustration of the "smiling faces" (that show no traces of the evil that lurks within) now turning into devilish laughs.

some shocking fade out despotism by the leader. well-worn genre, but the records sounds especially great, there's spaces everywhere. except no space for pre-elevator eric gale on electric guitar, who throughout the record usually gets faded out at the mere suspicion of a solo. which is a pity because he could cook up a storm in the late 60s. no wonder he turned to snooze.

we've had this strategy before on a grant green funk record, studio fade-outs combined with canned applause, but here it's even more pure: a somewhat overproduced gillespie album from 69 repackaged as a "live" recording in 77 with a courteous clap track that sounds totally out of place (plus these are obviously not live recordings anyway) yet still gives the record an extra vibe

thanks for those! the roxy one is at the end of a side, so that's less surprising than the koerner/murphy at the start of side b. that second workman fade-out you're mentioning makes no sense at all! (and wow, that steely dan track is unlistenable )

oh and i just reminded myself of this here record. the a side is a beatles suite with a handful of very considered fade-outs and sometimes fun interludes (here echoplexed bass clarinet), excellent throughout (contrary to our previous jazzed-up beatles experiences on this thread)

listened to this record while making breakfast and stumbled across a perfect little fade-out: i love the hook when his voice goes down to sing "i gotta wake up before we break up," and when it's due one more time and the fade-out starts you think oh no they're going to switch off during my favorite part and then you still hear he doesn't go into it this time and you're not missing anything. very satisfying little drama, this is how you do it.
