Re: Best of 2022

Here's what I listened to... Vierne & Saint-Saens: Harmonium Vs Organ by Guilio Mercati This is the album I listened to the most this year - every night for a while. It's a very addictive listen, very calming, very engrossing. I didn't know the composer Louis Vierne's music at all before this. He wa...

Re: thoughts on recent listenings

Amazed to find myself enjoying a current yoof music album by a hyped-up, trendy, style-mag-friendly band. Namely "Jewellery" by Micachu & the Shapes. Thought it was try-hard and poseury at first; kids trying to be clever. Singer has that disingenuous affected UK inner-London twang to her voice which...

Re: thoughts on recent listenings

Mick Beck "Life Echoes" (Discus 2009) Solo bassoon (and sax and recorder and ocarina and tin and swanny whistles and vixen call) improv. Oliver Postgate gone Cybermen. Sunny iterations from the practice room, scalar and rejuvenating. High-art pantomime. An Ornette Coleman and an Eric Dolphy tune api...

Re: reasons for releasing

There's a faintly bizarre assumption underlying several posts here: that musicians who release a lot of CDs are doing so "knowing" that they are putting out sub-par art. Just as listeners' opinions about albums change over time, so do musicians'. The expectation of being able to hear every single re...

Re: Packaging: the Decline of the Spine - w/poll

I might not be planning on throwing it away, but ultimately it will be thrown away. Even if I were to keep that CD case for the rest of my life, it will still end up as landfill when I'm dead and gone. And I own a lot of CDs. Hopefully someone will come up with a way of recycling or biodegrading tho...

oh, and don't get me started on shrinkwrap, probably the most irritating material ever.

Re: Packaging: the Decline of the Spine - w/poll

Plastic cases aren't recyclable, so I vastly prefer paper or card packaging. Personally couldn't care less whether it has a spine or not, but there are options for packaging with spines made from recyclable card.

Re: post rock + atonality = who?

Actually what you're describing is making me think of Henry Cow for some reason. Probably because they they were an atonal rock band with a distinctly chilly European modernist feel. Have a listen to Pence Eleven too if you can, a "pop group" who released several albums on Middle Class Records in th...

Re: Newlondonwhat?

dunno if I'm stoking old coals here, but someone just pointed me to this thread, knowing I'd be interested. I don't think there is anything "new" or epochal happening in London in terms of methodologies of free improvisation/eai. The closest thing I've noticed to anything approaching anything like a...
