Re: Recently Watched Films 2020

I actually saw it after Christmas and before New Years', so technically this is the wrong thread, but Dan, I have to disagree with your assessment of the last 20 minutes of Parasite , I think the abrupt tonal shift from black comedy to a weird synthesis of surreal horror and melancholy social realis...

Re: 2010-2019: best of the decade lists...

I’m shocked to see so many Pop/R&B tunes listed here. To be fair, my post was somewhat tongue-in-cheek (not that I don't love any of those tunes); my sense is that even the microdemographic that IHM represents doesn't constitute any kind of coherent barometer of anything that happened in the last t...

Re: Great free jazz/improvised albums 2005-2015

(how shitty those FMPs sound notwithstanding). You know, I don't think I've ever heard an FMP disc where the sound quality was ever more than "adequate". The vinyl era stuff like Machine Gun and Pakistani Pomade sounds grainy; a lot of the CD era stuff like Elf Bagatellen or Tree of Life sounds lik...

Re: Annette Krebs and Andrea Neumann, still active?

Krebs has been doing the "Konstruktion" sets since at least 2014 (the first time I saw her perform one). Both are fairly regular live performers, at least here in Berlin. They may not put out a lot of CDs, but who does these days? If anything, free improv and classical might be the two niche genres ...

Re: Great free jazz/improvised albums 2005-2015

What I always felt is that this area of music was declared "dead" when only a small handful of musicians were even physically able to turn over ideas quickly enough to really develop it further. We still don't know what is on the other side of Parker / Guy / Lytton, IMO. Side note for a future sub-...

Re: Great free jazz/improvised albums 2005-2015

If that happens to be on offer on the CD table when I go to the next Braxton show on Sunday, I will be sure to pick it up on your recommendation. On that late-80s/early-90s Braxton band, I still think Willisau is one of my favorite recordings. Do you ever think about those Crouch/Marsalis "jazz wars...

Re: Great free jazz/improvised albums 2005-2015

I was on the fence about whether to start a new thread about this or post to this one, since I suspect it's more on the "classical" side of the spectrum than the "jazz" side, but since it was the opening event of a "jazz" festival, I guess it passes muster. Anyway, I saw the Anthony Braxton "Sonic G...

Re: AMM Thread (renamed)

thanks for this as well. I USED to like when Prevost did things like he would on The Nameless Uncarved Block (1992) Live in Allentown (1994) but today when I listen to those recordings, I'm taken a bit back when Eddie goes all jazz. To my ears today, there is a clash of styles that doesn't work as ...

Re: AMM Thread (renamed)

thanks for this. I've been waffling regarding buying the 3 CD set called Unintended Legacies which are the concerts from December 5th, 2015, April 7th., 2016 & June 9th, 2016 Have you heard these? I'm probably ordering them anyway as I'm very curious to hear these recordings. Yeah I picked this up ...

Re: AMM Thread (renamed)

Did anyone here attend? I read that the second set was strong. Yeah I was there, it was fantastic. Both sets were great. I assume your statement about the second set comes from that review on the Free Jazz Blog? I found that review baffling. I have no idea what the author meant about the audience b...

Re: Great free jazz/improvised albums 2005-2015

Hijacking this thread to ask Stevie Rey and Captain Hate if they see anything on this program list that would tickle their fancy? I already got a ticket for the huge Braxton thing at the Gropius Bau on the opening Thursday, and am thinking of getting a ticket for the small-group Braxton thing for Su...

Re: I Hate Television

I think I need to put Deadwood on my 'to watch' list. Absolutely! If I were being totally objective, I'd have to put Deadwood second place in the trinity of all-time greats The Wire, Deadwood, and The Sopranos, but on a personal level I like the Sopranos more because of the heavy emphasis upon pers...

2) Breaking Bad - some people hated Hank (he was despicable but I loved the execution of his character). Strong disagree on Hank being despicable. Obviously with Walt being the protagonist of the series, it's built-in that the viewer is going to root for Walt, but Hank, however flawed as a person, ...

Re: Great free jazz/improvised albums 2005-2015

his had me cracking up, but the mention of Berlin and Tokyo is misplaced, since there isn't a single musician from either of those two cities mentioned (the FMP label was based in Berlin, but Brötzmann is and was always based in Wuppertal). there are only a handful of specific musicians from anywhe...

apologies for the slight thread diversion, but I wanted to post this somewhere here and this seemed like as good a place as any.
