Good call, I'd forgotten that! (Still like Tatsuya best with the trio with Jack Wright & Michel Doneda though!)

Anybody ever heard Rashied Ali and Le Roy Jenkins' "Swift are the Winds of Life"?
violin and drum kit really wild stuff. I used to have the CD but left it in my old car when she passed on, (still have teh jewel case.)

Hernani Faustino, Pedro Sousa - Falaise (Dromos)

Hernani Faustino, Heddy Boubaker - Domino Doubles (Re:Konstrukt)
Two bass/sax free improv recordings featuring superb portuguese bass player Hernani Faustino.
'Domino Doubles' is closer to lowercase improv with lots of space in the conversation and emphasis on sound placement, while 'Falaise' is more out-there, emotional, sculptured tour de force by both players.
The 2 sax players cover a wide range (from Jack Wright/Michel Doneda to Pharoah Sanders/Coltrane, it's all there). Hernani Faustino (who plays for the Red Trio) is a revelation for me on these discs.
Both excellent.
Re: list your free jazz favorites
i came at this album by cline & bendian's interstellar space revisited, which is *heavy* in comparison. where the original is more fluid and finesse, the cline version is near industrial, manhandled w/electric guitar, effects, and muscular drumming. worth a listen if you can stand john mclaughlin-type shit.laughter_CS wrote:speaking of... Re: list your free jazz favorites
there is a sale on the Clean Feed site at the moment, so I just picked these 3:
Samuel Blaser - Pieces of old Sky
Mark Dresser - House of Mirrors
Martin Speicher - Shapes and Shadows
The Martin Speicher is awesome. Hard to find other music by him.

Try to find Erdtone - Notation des Lots (Kreta), rec 1998 (on Hybrid) with Hans Tammen, Michael Vorfeld and Georg Wolf. Rocks! (Thanks for reminding me to listen to it again, too..)

this guy is a genius! thanks for the tip Dan.
Some more spiritual free weirdness along similar lines :
- Gary Hassay, Dan DeChellis, Tatsuya Nakatani Ritual Joy on Konnex Records
- Reuben Radding Intersections and Fugitive Pieces on his own label (Pine Ear)
- Αnd last but not least the quartet of Mayas/Nutters/Galvez/Olsen Dirty In The Different Tradition on FMR, which is the prequel to the also wonderful Hail Satan on Creative Sources.

Roscoe Mitchell's "Sound" is great! Never listened to it before. Track 3 (the little suite) is marvellous, a crazy mix between marching band music and screaming horns, Sound 1(track 2) is a bit hard to get...
Apart from "Sound", some of my favourites:
-Ornette Coleman "At the golden circle vol. 1 and 2" (I definitely need to re-play them one of these days)
-Albert Ayler spiritual unity
-Cecil Taylor Conquistador
-Coleman's "Something Else"
and obviously Don Cherry's "Mu vol.1 and 2" and the two blue notes by the same guy.

Most overrated "jazz" outfit in the last twenty years. Try Otomo's New Jazz Quintet instead and hear the difference.mono tony wrote:supersilent

i don't know how well it has transferred to cd, but frode gjerstad has an ensemble that includes lasse marhaug. when i saw them life they managed to bring the noise and jazz aspects of the project together well.

of the ten or so supersilent records, '4' left the best impression. i don't doubt that Otomo's quintet is superior, and i don't think supersilent is rated very highly here in the states, if at all.Dan Warburton wrote:Most overrated "jazz" outfit in the last twenty years. I've seen Arve Henriksen live here in Rome last year and I left the concert-hall a bit disappointed. Henriksen tone on the trumpet is actually a copy of Jon Hassell one...

Try with George Lewis. He's a member of AACM but he's also been interested in computer music
