I know that it's not a totally PC thing to admit here...but I'm really enjoying this CD a lot more than I'd anticipated..

I think it's great as well. I was a little leery because I'm not too much of an evan parker fan but it's really interesting stuff. It's enjoyable to listen to, instead of just being bracing or conceptually interesting or whatever.

all three new B-Boim's are great listen ... yesterday i saw solo performance by Seijiro Murayama (he is now shitenian regular) and got his IMJ release 'Space And Place' which i am looking forward to hear (the concert was great BTW)- and related to Seijiro he is planning to do American tour next year (in march i think) (Boston, New York, Chicago) and he is looking for places to play. listened to malfatti / filip "imaoto" a bunch of times: really amazing record, at least as good as the set i saw them play live, and in many ways better because that show was a little too quiet and with the cd i can turn the volume up! it's an odd piece of music in many ways because having listened several times i remember almost nothing about it. the sound itself works much more physically, activating space rather than just inhabiting it, almost entirely unconcerned with the things that i traditionally go looking for in music (narrative progression, emotional content, etc).

though it seems too easy to draw parallels between this type of music and modern art, i'm reminded of my experience with robert ryman. i love his work, read the recent book on him, have spent a lot of time looking at his paintings - and yet i recall very little about them afterwards - they operate almost purely on a tactile level and can only really be experienced as such. so i make periodic treks to dia to look at their ryman room because to me the beauty of those paintings is the way they operate within space, the way the paint was moved around: their existence on the level of pure object. "imaoto" in many ways operates very similarly for me.

The title track is the best, but the rest of the album follows the same format (organ, drum machine and voice), with similar themes, so it's hard to go wrong. There's a nice instrumental of 'first time ever I saw your face', as well. Damn good, actually.

meaning you don't like this disc, or there's lots of other good stuff from then? i don't dispute the latter, but i just rarely find myself pulling out too many other "older" improv discs that i've had since they came out. what else would be on your short list?

one reason Den stands out a bit is that both Drumm and Sugimoto changed directions drastically soon after that, whereas maybe some other musicians from then built on that work in the same direction, so in those cases, maybe the Kud (in order to differentiate Jesses) would be more likely to pull out their more recent work? I know I find myself playing Good Morning Good Night more than do, for instance.

anyway, just a guess...
