My sister told me ( right after she told me I was a brave man for having twins at 43 ) was that the terrible twos start at 18 months

They absolutely do. The first 18 months were cake. The last 4 have been a grind.

On the plus side, he's starting to skateboard already. Crazy

Great, you got that Transtromer collection!
I read him for the first time working a stay awake overnight position in a halfway house for troubled teens, in 1980 (I remember I was into him when I came to work a midnight shift and was told Lennon had been murdered).
Laying on a sofa in an adolescent treatment center reading Transtromer until 5 am....

Also started Guns, Germs and Steel. Reading it slowly, a chapter at a time every few days in between other things. I

all this pynchon discussion over the past few pages has got me to stop lurking (at least for this post) -- i'd read all the rest of pynchon's stuff before i started GR, so knew how to deal with him, but i found Zak Smith's "Pictures Showing What Happens On Each Page Of Thomas Pynchon's Novel Gravity's Rainbow" to be the perfect companion piece -- it used to be up online somewhere (it still might be), but i would recommend getting the physical version of it -- its really alot of fun to read a page of GR and try to figure out what image Smith is going to make a painting of -- they weren't always how i saw it in my head, but some were completely on spot

For work on a paper, I've been reading (and--even more--buying) a bunch of philosophy of perception books written over the last 20 years. Not having any current academic connection means no good library for me to use. Anyhow, a lot of Putnam, Hacker, Tye, Alston, Coates, Yablo, and McDowell.

Very interesting book that spends just the right amount of space going through the social environment at the time to provide a background to Merrick's life.

I've been going through Bakhtin's "From the Prehistory of Novelistic Discourse."

I just finished Titus Groan by Mervyn Peake which I greatly enjoyed. It also seems to fit in nicely with Bakhtin's ideas on novelistic discourse.

I'm taking a break before moving on to Gormenghast and am, instead, reading The Magic Mountain. I started it before, really enjoyed it and then stopped. I don't know why.

Trying to wrest a grip of some sort on my reading. I am just now finishing books started months ago-no fault (usually) of the books, but of my long habit of getting 5-7 books going simultaneously.

These two (among others, like Galbraith's The Predator State) were pretty directly the result of my 4 days at the RNC last September:





I have set aside for now Denis Johnson's Tree of Smoke, will return to it.

Jimmy Corrigan: The Smartest Kid On Earth

This is terrific stuff-to my surprise, the 4 generations of enervated men chronicled in comic form becomes strongly emotive and digs into your psyche, like reading German psychoanalyst Mitscherlich's Society Without The Father illustrated by Winsor McCay [Little Nemo/ column that ran 1905-1914].

Highly recommended.

felt in a need of a lighter read, so i started reading "Life of Pi". however, about half way though it's starting to piss me off. strated "Invisible Cities". then back to "The Corrections". or "Please Kill Me" that a friend lent me.
