There's a reason Steve's username is Snailed, in case you guys didn't get it before.

I feel like it'd behoove the hosting site and presentation to not take longer than the challenge took in the first place...

....then again, there's no particular hurry....

It will be up within the next week or so. Richard volunteered to help a bit, so I will take him up on that. Thanks, Richard.

As far as:
I feel like it'd behoove the hosting site and presentation to not take longer than the challenge took in the first place...

....then again, there's no particular hurry....
Considering the challenge was done by many people all at the same time, most of which submitted right under the deadline - and the collecting of tracks/information, organizing/tracklisting, presentation, etc is all done by one - I don't see how this logic holds up. It's also been particularly difficult because we are not eliminating any material (the total running time is just under two hours). Very, very difficult to find a tracklisting that works in this context, but I'm close to reaching something I'm proud of.

That being said, I have let life get in the way a bit, so I'll concentrate on getting this done ASAP. I was in the middle of a move that dematerialized after signing the lease, and it was a huge mess (both time-wise and financially). So, my apologies, guys (no girls on this comp, unfortunately - big sausage fest). Check back a week from today; I'll get my snaily ass moving.

EDIT: Apparently our own Vanessa Rossetto submitted a track that I overlooked, so I retract the sausage fest comment.

EDIT 2: Also I apologize for being really grouchy here. As you can tell I was pretty pissed about my failed move...

Dude..Don't feel pressured. Take the right amount of time to give it justice (or not)

It'll be done when it's done...

I hear you, D. I've taken plenty of time to go over many different tracklistings, and I only give that ETA because I feel like I've exhausted the options and found something I'm pretty happy with (minus a few tweaks that need to be made here and there... and unfortunately those tweaks are what have held me up). If it's not here in a week, there will be a post explaining exactly where we are in the process. Since it's a community project, I feel like I should at least be that transparent about it.

I forgot about sequencing, valid, valid delay.

Also; didn't mean to 'call you out' snailed, meant it more like an aesthetic suggestion, in the spirit of the restriction of the challenge, but I have little/no idea as to what goes into what you're doing (well, I get sequencing) so am very content to wait...

sorry to be pushy!
looking forward to it!

No worries, man :) Sometimes pushy is good (and what I need)! And yes, in the spirit of the restrictions, I've set some of my own (which have, in turn, caused some problems sequencing). Everyone that submitted is included, even if I feel some minor "rule" has been broken. It was brought up earlier: If you look closely into each track, you can make a case for rules being broken in pretty much any of them. There really is no way to record in a bubble, with one object and a mic/cable/recorder. (Does the chair you're sitting on while you record count? Also, the earlier discussion about intentions. Etc, etc, etc). Yet, all of the tracks do stay closely to the spirit of the rules, which in turn creates a nice continuum between all the tracks (despite some drastic aesthetic variations - this causing me the most problems in sequencing). I feel that everyone had a slightly different understanding of the rules, but the important thing was that they all restricted their approach in a closely related way. Surprisingly, no one submitted a track that completely ignored the rules (besides my man flies, who broke the 10 min mark slightly :D ), and most are very close to my interpretation of the restrictions.

Anyway, there will be more of this when it's done and set up on the site. Thoughts? One thought of my own: Are these all interpretations of one composition?

I would pay a million dollars to learn that VR's track was made entirely with a sausage.

Sausages/Milk?

OK, so the tracklisting is coming along. Because everything sort of runs right into one another, I'm forced to add some small silences in between tracks (like a CD index silence), otherwise it is very hard to find a nice flow. I also had to go in and do some small fades (mostly not audible - I'm talking milliseconds for the most part) to make sure there were no clicks in between the tracks for the people that did not do a small fade in/out originally. Considering that fades and normalization were allowed in the rules to begin with as the only editing allowed, I feel this is fair, but somebody can feel free to argue this point if they feel like it.

Certainly not (no more than all solo violin pieces are interpretations of the same composition). IMO that way of thinking makes little sense in this context...

Bingo. Agreed 100% on that. All we did was select instruments and recording setups beforehand, and decide they were going to be solo, which is what improvisors do all the time anyway.

If you want to turn improvisation orthodoxy completely on its head and say that the instrument, by virtue of defining certain limits on the sounds being produced, is itself the 'composition', then I suppose you could make an argument for that, but seeing as we were all using different instruments I don't think it applies in this context.

would you consider something like this to be interpretations of one composition? the instructions provided aren't a whole lot more explicit than the rules for this challenge.
