the reason i think it's a good start despite it's not sounding like much of his stuff is that you can listen to it & then figure what you'd like to hear. if you dig the rich tonal drones, then maybe you head for Hellish or Lurches next. If you want something less drone-oriented, you can look through his older stuff. Of course if you like it perfect as is and want more of exactly the same, then no. it's not a good starting point.

the Freedom From cassette (probably a soulseek exclusive these days) is probably the best literal starting point as I think it hints at and works with bits of everything from all the periods of his work.

HE is back!

Post by chimologic »

he is back doing gigs in europe. heard nothing but amazing things about the two gigs that have happened. Kevin is one of my top 5 musicians and he is also an super cool guy. I opened that show at the flux factory a year ago and talked to him for a while there, which was the last time he has done an east coast gig as far as I know.

He was the first person I asked to play at no fun. for a while it looked like he was going to do a duo with tom smith for it. but that fell trough. hopefully he participates next year.

Happy he is doign shows again , Pita's and my favorite topic of discussion when he was staying here for no fun was how to get kevin back into action.

I also saw him play a duo with Lee in La for all tomorrows parties which was my favorite set of the whole festival. funny thing is that he remembers meeting me there via nels cline but I cant recall...

comedy is good but I say best introduction is to get the green all guitar album (self titled) and sheer hellish miasma and spin them back to back. both completely amazing and original and yet completely different from each other to the point you would think is two completely different people if you weren't told is the same killer musician...

re: mutek - i think all the shows from last year are on the site now. but yeah i still have the recordings and i made mp3s a long time ago although i never did cd's 'cause im a horrible person. ill put them back on my hd again. my soulseeeek name is christiaan. the mutek site will probably be better quality, but the streams can be a little spotty. i think. that might just be because my work computer sucks. anyway.

I can say with confidence that Kevin Drumm is not a genius.

Also, spending a ridiculous amount of time to construct a method for an end doesn't necessarily translate into something worthwhile.

And I get it; I just don't like it.

justification being? genius is one of those words that is probably never true when it's used, but drumm is damn good.

true. however, spending a ridiculous amount of time might be necessary to create something really awesome that might be outwardly similar to some material which did not require the same effort to create.
And I get it; I just don't like it.
what's to get?

Everyone has already started sobbing on their keyboards becuase Larry doen'snt like Kevin Drumm. Boo-hoo.

Since you think he is damn good -- he's a genius? Great justification. My confidence is that I am not convinced of the claim. I don't go into listening to every musician thinking he is a genius until proven otherwise... I hate these arguements because it usually just ends up on the cutting board of a particular preference.

"What's to get?" People usually say that when you happen to not like their favorite musicians. I'm suprised you lost my intent.

gmby: I'm smarter than you if that's your concern.

Mike: Thanks. You can right click and save the picture.

thanks for the kind words. i actually agree that he's no genius. i'm sure he would agree as well. but to say that something isn't at all worthwhile when obviously plenty of people are getting their whiles worth is a pretty big show of ego on your part, no?

nope. we just get irritated cuz you're a jerk. i don't think anyone minds your disliking drumm, any more than we mind drinky crow disliking it a whole page ago.

i never claimed he was genius, and the only case i noticed where anyone did so without inherent exagerration was jon's 'nearest thing america's got', which, well, you aren't disputing. and 'not convinced' is usually used in english to indicate the opposite of confidence, so you'll understand if i assume it means you're just trying to make a stink.

lost your intent? your assumption was that we've not given this any thought and were going to pawn your dislike off on some understanding you lack? well, i for one do not. i understand you disliking the music. i don't understand the need to be a jerk about it, but for the time being that's your priority and perogative.

I don't know that anyone was crying Larry. I think we're curious about your opinions.
Since you think he is damn good -- he's a genius? Great justification.
The funny thing is, no one said this. We do think he's damn good, but it seems to me the most charitable reading would be there are reasons, unstated perhaps, for our thinking of Drumm as genius or at least as more talented than others, and those reasons and the subsequent genius tag contribute to our thinking he's damn good. So that, instead of the other way around, as you've put it above.

Aren't you saying something similar though? You're confident he's not good and thus are confident he's not a genius.
I hate these arguements (sic) because it usually just ends up on the cutting board of a particular preference.
I think that whether you enjoy Drumm's work is a function of preference. I think, though, if you'd be willing to discuss and not act like everyone's attacking you when you're the one who started in what appeared to be a sneering tone, there could be a rather interesting discussion on Drumm's talent and why those of us who are fans, um, are fans. I.e., why do we like him, why do some of us think he's the closest thing to a musical genius America has right now, etc. etc. And then interesting rejoinders by you, someone who doesn't like Drumm.
"What's to get?" People usually say that when you happen to not like their favorite musicians. I'm suprised you lost my intent.
I honestly have no idea what you mean here. I think mudd (and he can correct me if i'm wrong) was more pointing out that "getting" Drumm's work would seem to mean liking it. There's not some extra "thing" to get outside of the appreciation of his work, i.e. "getting" is liking.

I think if feelings have been hurt it might be from your snide tone more than your opinions on an artist we like.

And I really hate this message board phenomenon of dropping some pithy statement meant to stir up people and then a couple posts later complaining that, um, the pithy comment attracted questions.

At least on IHM the questions it attracted have been, at least as far as I can see, civil and intelligent, unlike most message boards.

I'm going to go listen to I Drink Your Skin now.

I´m not going back and reading this thread again, so I don´t know exactly what we covered this time through, but Kevin´s range is absurdly vast, from the SHM/LoL material all the way to his earlier microscopic work with Taku Sugimoto among others, and various points in between. listening to the most recent work only shows you one part of this, and I´m not sure that it´s my favorite, although SHM is certainly a pretty overwhelming work, out Merzbowing Merzbow.

and I stick by my statement that he´s the closest I´m aware of that the US has to a musical genius these days. your mileage may vary, which is totally cool, not sure why you have to be an ass about it, though. I used the word genius very consciously because if I got a vote for the MacArthur "genius"grants (only US citizens are eligible), he´d get mine, both because of his past work and what he´d hopefully use the financial freedom to accomplish. I´d like to hear who´d get your vote, Mr. Horse.

i was about to respond with other ideas about who might deserve a macarthur grant, but now i can't think of anyone i'd prefer to kd.

i'm excited by the news that he might be starting to perform more. i don't suppose we'll see him working his way back into erstwhile records territory anymore, but i'm perfectly open to more drumm recordings in my collection. there's a few that could use a healthy reissue, as well...
