Circle Line #1

OK to see how many people are really reading this stuff (I often think I'm posting to myself and about three other kindred souls), I thought we'd play a little game, one I devised a while back for my pals Henrik and Olivier Brunet.. It's called Circle Line, and the rules of the game are straightforward enough: find the link between the two films (and, of course, name the films). It could be a common actor, or a common director, or composer, or title, or sibling, name, whatever. Geddit? Instead of sending you the whole circle (which of course ends up where we started), here are the first two. Find the link, ID the movies, and I'll post the next pic. And so on until we all get lost or fall asleep (when the yellow cats are yawning around the back of Beasley Street)

that looks like a film quentin tarantino would love, so it would have that it common with from russia with selfsame. no idea what it is without googling the image, though ... (the reader test isn't going so great, i often think i'm one of three kindred souls still reading stuff on the internet at all, posting to oneself is the only mode to keep the concept of online content alive)

Hold your fire on Tarantino, you might find he pops up later in the circle Don't recall him ever having raved about this particular film, but he certainly admires the director. That said, I might as well add pic 4 (waiting for Henrik to ID 3, if nobody else does).. You should be able to work out 3 from 2 and 4...

I've never seen Marnie.

i remember it as deeply flawed in the story and chemistry betwen leads (must have been hell for hedren anyway), but it has great texture and energy, the first of the late trilogy (topaz and the curtain don't count) that have b-movie auteur vibes and he gives full rein to his sleaziness. much more interesting than this second man who knew to much i'd say.

that looks like gloria grahame with the hanky under her upper lip. i've seen this, but all the classic noirs, different as they are, are one big muddle in my memory.

During tonight's Warriors game, out of curiosity I reverse Google searched #5, and even now I'm not sure of the connection. But here goes:

Scaramouche (1952), starring Stewart Granger. I am unfamiliar with this movie or actor, but a quick read of IMDB tells me that he was born James Lablache Stewart, nicknamed "Jimmy". So I guess the connection is unrelated Jimmy Stewarts.

Indeed it is Ms Grahame, and if you google her along with the actor on the left you'll get the director, which is the link back to the previous image (nobody recognise the actor?). Thanks for playing along Lutz (shame nobody else is)

so the rules are i can google names, but not images? ok, that makes it doable, otherwise you know or you don't. then this is a young lee marvin? okay, googling the two gives me the big heat by fritz lang. (which i remember as only kind of an ok movie, i love glenn ford in some roles, but he doesn't really work for me here.)

so, a fritz lang film ... surfer mentions stewart granger ... whom i'm very familiar with mainly as old surehand from the german karl may westerns, but i do remember him in more classic roles, i quite like him, a bit too soft around the jowls, which always gives him something relatable even in the arrogant roles ... anyway, i wouldn't have recognized him from the picture, i must admit, so i wouldn't have got this. but if we google the names again it's moonfleet, not scaramouche (which i think i've seen), so much for image search. and surfer is presumably correct with the link being 2 james stewarts?

this is fun, because for somebody who's supposedly not into movies at all, i've seen a lot of the classics and every still immediately starts gnawing at me.

Yep, doing well: Stewart Granger's real name was James Stewart, and that's him in Moonfleet, directed by Fritz Lang, as was The Big Heat, and yes, that is Lee Marvin, so I'll let you have the next three

sorry that it's me again 7 is easy, that's the killers. 8 looks like eddie constantine on the left? i'm not sure if i have seen any of the lemmy caution movies, not out of a dislike, just didn't occur to me. 9. wow burt's hair looks atrocious here. the obvious one with the two would be scorpio, the setting and the general drabness might point to a late entry in the airport franchise. is that a trap? (not sure if they were in one of those together.) will report back once i've figured out possible links if nobody else chimes in.

ah, the swede! i even have a dvd of that. actually burt is very good in this, no? the lumbering brute in him. to my excuse i must add that the original german title was rächer der unterwelt (avengers of the underworld).

since you've laid no real traps so far, 11 should be steve mcqueen and yul brynner in the magnificent seven. i could not have placed jeff goldblum in 10, but a quick look at his filmography gives me death wish (and now i seem to remember the hey that's jeff goldblum moment from that ... i do not endorse death wish or a host of other morally edgy charles bronson movies, though i like to watch him squint. jeff goldblum, otoh, is a real mistake). the link back to scorpio is the director ... again, i'll have to look up the name, but i know, because his oeuvre (big sleep, haha) came up a couple of years ago possibly after some of his early british works received posh reissues? was it here or elsewhere? anyway i'm sure he's treated as an auteur on these here pages but i don't think he's ever made a good film: michael winner.
