if they are in the wild card game, who is going to start it? NY hits lefties better than righties, so that is a strike against Manaea. Fiers would be interesting, he is the one who broke Stanton's jaw with a pitch a few years ago and there is still bad blood there. obviously there is a ways to go and it is not clear who would start for NY either, just curious what you think.

No idea. Manaea has the highest ceiling but been the weakest lately, but maybe he turns it around. I dont trust Anderson at all in a playoff game, just from years of watching him. Plus waht you said about LHP. Jackson also I dont trust yet, had a poor outing last night. Maybe Cahill? His ground ball rate is like 55% and A's have a very good INF defense. I dont think Fiers is as good in reality as he's been with the A's. I think I trust Cahill the most and has been the most consistent.

So glad to see your guys make a run, surf.

The Yanks' position this year really makes a mockery of divisional seeding.

This Kopech kid has a nuclear fastball that moves. Carlos Rodon has been legit in the second half. With Eloy on the verge and a No. 3 pick almost assured, the brighter days are ahead on the South Side. Too bad Abreu has gone down for a couple of weeks, missing out on another 100 RBIs When your team is bad, you take your enjoys where you can find them.

the worst was 2015, the NL Central had the three best records in all of baseball and poor PIT (who won I think 97 games) had to face a then unhittable Arrieta and lost the game 1-0.

the one game wild card is dumb enough (I have been saying this since the inception) but not reseeding once the final four teams in the league are determined is deeply absurd. but baseball has never been too concerned about fairness in the postseason, this time it counts! :D

From an A's fan perspective, as boring a game as you could imagine. 2 hits through 7 innings iirc, and literally the only thing to cheer for was the Davis HR which, by that time, was too little too late. Every big moment and call went against the A's, and wouldnt even have matter if they hadnt. Bummed we didnt even get one home playoff game.

it's a truly terrible postseason system, and when you lose that game (as NY did in 2015), the feeling you take away is this kind of limbo where you aren't quite sure if your team made the playoffs or not. they probably should have started Treinen but easy to say in retrospect.

very good team, was happy to get through that game, tonight will go a long way to deciding the BOS/NY series one way or the other.

Does anyone else find watching baseball on tv nearly impossible because of that goddamn strike zone box? I had to stop because it became so infuriating that it ruined the game for me.

Bummed the Cubs blew it because I got tickets to see the Brewers in Wrigley if they had won the Wild Card. My childhood friend that I grew up going to Brewers games and listening to Uecker games with as a kid was going to fly in from LA. Now he has a chance to see them on the cheap and I may have to drive up to Milwaukee solo to see a game late in the CS. We've agreed on the World Series if it works out. Needless to say, I'm really trying to savor this run. I caught a DS game in 2011 against the Diamondbacks and I'll be really bummed if it doesn't work out for this playoffs.

They did not. They lost the play-in game to the playoffs. I dont consider the losers of the First Four games of the NCAA tournament to have made the tournament either.

I will stand by this. ;)

Two nights, three bush-league moves from Machado. That and his lack of hustle will surely increase his market value.

Mets are my second team, so I sat there midseason when there were rumors of the Brewers making a move for Wheeler. Instead, we picked up Schoop and Gio (ugh). If I could have made one change to how Stearns (GM) played things differently, I wouldn't have bothered with those pickups, and would have gone after Wheeler.

Still a good season. I made it up for the NLCS game 7, which I was grateful for (despite the disappointing performance). Losing means I saved a lot of money that I would've spent on going back up the next weekend for the World Series too, so - trying to look at the silver lining, but totally would have wrecked my month and energy levels going back up today if I'd have had the chance :)

Bottom left is Mays, isn't it?

Yup.

Mays came with the team from New York, but Willie was SF's own, ROY in'59, .354 BA. First game he went 4-4 against Robin Roberts with 2 triples.

His lone WS appearance didn't end well.
