Rita and I celebrated our 34th wedding anniversary tonight at Rancho Nicasio (owned by the former manager of Huey Lewis and the News and his wife, blues singer Angela Strehli), dancing to Doug Adamz and Bravo!, a terrific band I've called dances with dozens of times.

The band did a killer version of Down In Mexico, one of my favorite songs by my all-time favorite group, The Coasters.

Here's the original, plus two more great late career tunes by the group:

Was talking plagiarism suits with one of my advanced dancer last Sunday. When Kitty Wells had a big hit with her classic "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels," Hank Thompson sued her for ripping off his song with her answer record. Her defense was the that song had already been around in two earlier incarnations long before Hank got his hands on it. Here are all four songs, same tune, in chronological order:

INTERESTING!

I have both versions, but the version [one of my dancers] mentioned in the sidebar on YouTube for the Aquatones song "You" is actually the original. I had thought the Fleetwoods did it first, but no, Thomas Wayne and the Delons was two years earlier (1959) and charted higher (5 vs 10)

The Fleetwoods: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bohMPplkpY

Brenda Lee always delivers, although her version failed to chart:

Here's a great obscure novelty song, not sure it did anything outside of NYC, Murray the K played it a lot:
