1) that was a very odd call, especially up 15-0, but it didn't end up mattering (if they kick the extra point there to make it 16-0, CIN kicks the extra point on their TD to make it 17-16 instead of 16-15).

2) I thought you didn't watch the game? I'm confused.

I read the box score and game threads. Tomlin has spent most of the regular season going for two at odd times.

JFC, can they staff the zebra playoff crews enough to see when a coach is trying to call timeout? Well run league imo.

Yeah, that was fucking ridiculous. I should have never talked them up. They're not playing good football today, and made the Packers look like a Super Bowl favorite in the second half.

BTW, until we warp to an alternate reality where the Oilers/Bills '92 wildcard game never happened, we have to start any talk of collapse with, "that had to be the second worst..."

Bengals' loss frees Niners to hire their offensive coordinator, Hue Jackson, as head coach. Was head coach with the Raiders for a year.

I had a feeling it was going to happen when the Bengals intercepted the ball and then ran all the way to the other side of the field and into the tunnel. They were acting like the game was over. It's amazing to me how stupid football players sometimes are, but I imagine it's just a product of the energy and emotion they need to summon in order to perform.
the GB/Seattle game in last year's playoffs was right up there also as far as collapses also, GB was up 19-7 when they got the ball back on their own 31 with 3:52 left, and eventually won in OT 28-22, giving up 3 TD drives totalling over 200 yards in about 7 minutes of game time.
This is worse than that game or the Buffalo/Houston game because it was completely self-inflicted. I mean, they gave them 30 yards on the field with the clock stopped and 22 seconds left.

Just a horrible weekend of football.

Of the 8 teams that played, only the Chiefs and Vikings looked like they actually belonged in the postseason.

Kirk Cousins looked like Chris Chandler out there today. His receivers bailed his ass out multiple times. That one -handed grab by Reed in the first half was a sure pick 6.

The Skins finished the season 0-4 against winning teams.

I feel fortunate that I only watched one of the four games (Sea-Minn). I watched two NBA games, played golf, went out to dinner, hung out with my dog at the pool, went to the dog park, all better activities than watching those games , at least with the benefit of hindsight.

Do kickers really freak out when the laces face them? I never heard that before Collingsworth mentioned it as a possible reason why Walsh missed the FG.

That Wilson to Leggett play was pretty amazing.

dunno, the NFL playoffs is rarely about two teams playing fantastic football. the weather and injuries and the refs are almost always huge factors and the excitement is that anything can happen, it's the closest the US team sports get to a big boxing match. the end of that CIN/PIT game, that was like Tyson's biting Holyfield's ear off. not a good example of the sport, but damn entertaining viewing*.

*keep in mind that I DVR every game and start an hour or two late, so I don't sit through challenges or commercials or halftime or whatever. i highly recommend this.

well, they did come back from 15-0 down and it was only really three guys fucking up (the guy who fumbled and the two personal fouls) who choked, not the whole team.

GB's collapse to SEA last year involved giving up 3 TDs and over 200 yards of offense in such a short time, which requires not just the whole defense sucking, but also the offense giving the ball right back almost every time (they did get a game-tying FG at the end of regulation). that is much more of a full team collapse than this game.

Kickers ALWAYS want the laces pointing straight at the goalpost. Facing off directions will make the ball hook, and facing the kicker will make how the ball leaves the foot very unpredictable (making it the equivalent of throwing a knuckleball in that you have no idea where it's going to go).

Yeah, the argument about the Saturday night game being some epic collapse really doesn't make sense. They went into the fourth quarter down 15-0, made it a game, and lost on the last series.

In '92 Buffalo made history. And they were down by 32 points in the third quarter. That was a enormous collapse. What happened in Saturday's game was just another loss due to a series of stupidity. We see things like that all the time, just not on as big a stage.

That's a great analogy. And your remark about weather was right on. That Cincy storm came to Boston yesterday, and I could barely fucking DRIVE through it. How good is football supposed to look under conditions like that? Amazing anything could be thrown or caught.

Pos has a good article on how poorly officiated the Saturday night game was (mainly on how there was no penalty on the Bernard injury or medical expert Joey Porter who shouldn't have been on the field) and how the rules are so dumbly written to leave huge gray areas on what constitutes a catch or a personal foul. Not to mention what is reviewable and what is not. I'm interested in if Mike Brown finally is embarrassed enough by his team playing with no professionalism or poise, no matter how poorly and one sided the game was officiated, to fire Marvin Lewis. Plus if Goodellspeak and his fellow dipshits clean up the rule book.

That article sounds interesting, Cap. Is there a link you can provide?

I have a hard time figuring out how to cut and paste links with an iPad. It's at NBC Sports if that helps. [edit] I figured it out

I watch most games that way regardless of sport. I do like to catch up an NFL game in the fourth quarter so I can switch to another game or RZ channel if my game is a rout.

It's a bummer, but I can't complain about a football player retiring while he's still got all his faculties and can maybe still expect to be able to walk when he's 40 years old. Life is bigger than football, bigger than all sports, which is one of the reasons I've stopped living on the edge about what my teams do. I still get all shades of furious about stuff, but I shake it off much easier than I used to. I feel bad for the Vikings kicker. When I was younger, if a guy on my team had missed that kick, I would have been searching for his house. Okay, not really, but you know what I mean.
