Right, but at least he has an excuse...
Re: NFL 2014
Can Jim Schwartz work with Tom Coughlin? Is Schwartz a great defensive mind or did he just coach great players? Scott?
Re: NFL 2014
He's had really stout defenses in three different cities now. That's moved well past coincidence.
Can he work with Coughlin? About as well as Parcells did with Jerry Jones, I suppose. Schwartz may have the stronger personality of the two. He could certainly make a positive impact if given the proper amount of leeway, though.

Re: NFL 2014
It might make sense. Schwartz and McAdoo could compete for the job of Coughlin's successor.Mo Noyz wrote:He's had really stout defenses in three different cities now. That's moved well past coincidence.

Re: NFL 2014
Yeah, that's an interesting thought. And if Coughlin wants to make one last run at it, he could do far worse than showing a little humility and bringing Schwartz in. I just can't see him doing it.
If they can keep Jennings and Cruz healthy next year their offense should be as strong as it's been in a long, long time. Manning has never had this much talent around him, IMO. Bring in Schwartz to shore up the D? Instant contender.

The Giants still need to improve the OL and LB units. They have been awful at screen pass offense and defense for several years running.Mo Noyz wrote:Yeah, that's an interesting thought. I think the benchmark for strong personalities coexisting should be Belichick and Parcells. Twice.Mo Noyz wrote:Can he work with Coughlin? About as well as Parcells did with Jerry Jones, I suppose.

Re: NFL 2014
Yeah, but what I mean is that they can still compete with what they have offensively if that defensive unit and scheme is shored up and their skill players are healthy. I'd have to think we agree on that. There are very few professional sports teams that don't have holes. Especially when there is a salary cap involved.
And when you look at the volatility of that division, it will still be ripe for the picking next year as well. I don't see Washington going anywhere, Philly has no identity and tons of holes and now folks are even starting to question whether Kelly is really the mad genius he was advertised as, and I wouldn't be shocked if Dallas turned back into a pumpkin next year after their absurdly improbable run this year (a la the 2013-14 Chiefs, and maybe worse).
Get a full year of Beckham, toss in a healthy Cruz and Jennings, field even a mediocre defense and they could easily take the division that somebody has to win.

You saw more of Wild Billy in Cleveland than I did, naturally. He always seemed a bit timid back then, or was I just reading him wrong? I never really saw his "fuck you, I'm Bill Belichick" come out until he started tasting success. When he took a little too much credit for drafting Brady while the rest of the world, in his mind, thought Bledsoe was still the Patriots franchise.

Re: NFL 2014
I think you were reading him wrong; he always had a my way or the highway attitude when he was running things here. He made some horrendous draft choice decisions, particularly when he thought that nobody realized how great Kyle Brady was until the JETS snapped him up and he had no contingency plan and ended up taking the worthless Craig Powell who was out of the league quickly. Steve Everett was another bust who I hate to bring up because he at least seemed like a good guy as he was getting knocked on his ass. In his partial defense, in Cleveland he had to endure Modell's meddling which would've driven me up a fucking wall.
Everybody whiffed on Brady considering he was taken in the sixth round. Being the world's tallest midget is what passes for genius in the GFL.
Parcells was smart to bring him back after Modell cut him lose but he made a few pointed remarks I know of that let everybody know who was really in charge which must have really chafed the hoody.

Re: NFL 2014
Yeah, I guess I should've taken the Kosar shitcanning into account, as well. That was likely the genesis of his over-sized personality, or at least when it became visible nationally.
BTW, sticking with the ex-Brown theme, Charlie P claims Richardson was a healthy scratch this weekend because he isn't a special teams player.

What you meant to say, Chuck, was that he is "not even" a special teams player.
How fucking embarrassing must it be to have given away your first round draft pick from this year for a cat who gets scratched from your playoff game even though he's 100% healthy?

Re: NFL 2014
The Kyle Brady story was the best, though. Even if it wasn't bad enough on the face of it, they let an ESPN reporter in the "war room" who subsequently leaked stuff out about phones getting thrown around the room amidst general mayhem about a borderline stiff like Kyle Brady, all while the clock was ticking. Needless to say, there have been no reporters invited subsequently.

Re: NFL 2014
I actually saw Brady make his professional debut at Joe Robbie Stadium that year. I was underwhelmed to say the least. But, I also figured not many skill players look very impressive the first day at their new job. Come to find out, that was essentially his ceiling. Though, in fairness he did have a really nice season or two when he went to Jacksonville later in his career.

Re: NFL 2014
Yeah I have no idea who eventually clued him in on talent evaluation but it was definitely a work in progress while here. He overly relied on combine crap and would bring a lot of gargantuan oafs who just couldn't cut it. Even some of his success stories, like Eric Turner, weren't quite as good as was originally hoped for. Or busts like Tommy Vardell, who got more comments about what a MILF his mother was than his prowess on the field, although I think Walsh eventually salvaged something from him. Touchdown Tommy seemed like a good guy so I take no pleasure from stating the facts.

Re: NFL 2014
Btw, rumors that the Redskins, under the new GM, are talking with Wade Phillips as a possible DC, have me pounding my johnson like it owes me money.
Yes, I know that this belongs in an off-season thread but for Redskins fans, this is the regular season.
[edit]Fuck, now I hear Wade isn't being considered. God fucking dammit.

Re: NFL 2014
I didn't know this until now.
"With Testaverde out with the injured shoulder, Bernie Kosar got the Game 8 home start against John Elway and the Denver Broncos. The Browns lost, 29-14, but the game was not even that close. With nine seconds remaining, Kosar threw a bomb to WR Michael Jackson for a touchdown – it was soon disclosed that in a move designed to defy his head coach, Kosar had drawn up the play in the dirt, while in the huddle. The Browns’ coaches did not have input into the play.
The very next day, Bill Belichick cut Bernie Kosar. He’d had his fill of the veteran starter, and had convinced Art Modell and the rest of the team brass; the decision was announced as “unanimous”. Belichick’s phrase, “diminishing skills”, would echo through the annals of Browns history, perhaps forever."

Wasn't it the TFL back when Brady was drafted?Captain Hate wrote:

Re: NFL 2014
I heard about Sad Santa last week, I completely forgot to mention it. Do it's off now?
Touchdown Tommy, there's a serious flashback...
Gordo, I also read that earlier when I went back to see why he cut Kosar. Pretty funny, actually. I had no idea Bernie had it in him! Guess I can't lay that one at Wild Billy's feet.
Michael Jackson 01. Very underrated WR, IMO.

Re: NFL 2014
I don't argue that Kosar wasn't a clubhouse lawyer but there's more to the story than that, including that the Browns had to start the great Todd Philcox against Seattle when they were in playoff contention.

Cappz, do you have any idea what our good friend Gordo is talking about here?
