the IHM metal thread
Re: the IHM metal thread
On a different side note, could someone post interesting (black) metal webzines, sites with reviews and other stuff (forum, interviews,...) ? Obviously there are tons out there, but maybe I'm missing something really good...

Ok, apart from the last two, I know them. Other two nice sites that come to mind are http://www.lurkerspath.com/ and http://metalreview.com/schiksalgemeinschaft wrote:I have these bookmarked, some already mentioned:

Yeah, the only stuff I have is the demos 12 inch with some terrible name I immediately forgot, but it has the archgoat cover and is suitably awesome. I'm frothing at the mouth for that split with Antediluvian. I wish I could see them play on the same bill-- are you in Canada, Holy Ghost?holy ghost wrote:Depends on the album - the full length had the fucking worst drum sound I have ever heard (PINGPINGPINGPINGPINGPINGPINGPINGPINGPINGPINGPINGPINGPINGPING) but the recent 12" with the Incantation and Archgoat covers was awesome. Saw them live in December and they fucking blew EVERYONE on the bill away, including Antediluvian (which was a fucking MONSTER of a show in it's own right). The two bands have a split LP out soon tooschiksalgemeinschaft wrote:some Adversial songs on YoutTube ain't bad, but it doesn't really grip me either. don't really know whY.![]()
I think the Antediluvian stuff from last year was unreal as well.
In other metal news:
Revenge's new album is officially out. I'm waiting on NWN!'s typically over the top packaging for the lp, before i hear it. J. Read is pretty much where it's at for the intersection of strange Decepticon-esque poetry and utter musical brutality.
New Zealand's newish black/death metal band Heresiarch has a one-sided 12 inch out on Satanic Skinhead Prop.; which is sort of too bad, as it's hard to really get behind that label for a number of reasons. Their demo tape gets constant play around here, though -- wish more dudes would package their tapes in this way. SSP also just released a Goatpenis/NYOGTHAEBLISZ ep, so if you really want to piss off people who care about, well, anything, then here's an EP for you. SSP's Antichrist Kramer has got to be one of the most hilariously surly label proprieters ever-- I've never seen so much utter contempt for his own label's fanbase and their tendency for geekery-- all the while releasing press statements with the most bloated hyperbolic drivel attached to his limited "elitist, hateful" limited-run releases fostering said geekery. But that's underground metal for you and record nerds are gluttons for punishment. Know your audience.
A newish one I still haven't heard is the Christian Mistress, but I'm looking forward to it. Ditto for the Pallbearer.

Re: the IHM metal thread
I forgot to mention Cruciamentum and their alliterative "Convocation of Crawling Chaos" 10inch, which has been my death metal jam lately. Really well-written stuff-- old school, but a lot less murky than so many of the so-called "occult" Incantation-rip death metal coming out now. They have an album out on Nuclear Winter, as well. And a split with thee mighty Vaesaleth.

Re: the IHM metal thread
Black metal is not an area I know much about, but I saw a really good band last night called Nyogthaeblisz. Between each song they just stood motionless for like 30 seconds while their gear emitted the most horrible, eardrum-tickling distorted high-pitched feedback. Hail Satan.
Re: the IHM metal thread
Oh, nice. Was this in Chicago? No way I could have seen them, but that would've been cool. They got kicked off Chaos and Tejas this year for being douchebags, but their music is pretty fierce.free math wrote:Black metal is not an area I know much about, but I saw a really good band last night called Nyogthaeblisz. Re: the IHM metal thread
Yeah, Cathedral of the Black Goat Fest or something like that, in this horrible Polish bar. Did you hear about the big fest in Oshkosh coming up?
Re: the IHM metal thread
Oh, ok. I see Deiphago and Black Witchery played too. They would have been kind of fun to see. But a lot of that stuff works better in the comfort of my living room. Did any of the bands do the funny growl voices when they were talking between songs? As if you wouldn't get that they're true evil if they didn't. I love that shit.free math wrote:Yeah, Cathedral of the Black Goat Fest or something like that, in this horrible Polish bar. Did you hear about the big fest in Oshkosh coming up?
The Gilead Media fest? Yeah. I may try to get to that cause I'll be in Madison around then. But I probably will only go to the Saturday show. Which means I'll miss the Body and Thou, but at least I could see Ash Borer and Fell Voices. Shit, I should probably figure that out soon, as I'm not sure how long tickets will last.
Re: the IHM metal thread
We couldn't stay for Deiphago. Friends that we ran into (Madison people... Nick from Jex Thoth/Zola Jesus?) said that Nyogthaeblisz was the real thing to see, that Deiphago was good but not great. They were super psyched to have seen Nyogthaeblisz. Black Witchery sounded pretty good. Loss was kinda crappy doom. Yeah I think Nyoga[...] spoke a bit in the affected (not effect-ed) voice -- love that.Tanner wrote:Oh, ok. I see Deiphago and Black Witchery played too. They would have been kind of fun to see. I saw Thou last year and I think I like them more on record than live... but they were good.
Saw the High Spirits LP for sale and almost bit... too soon to tell what I think of those guys.
Re: the IHM metal thread
Your friend was probably right-- Deiphago are pretty much noise core, and most people seem to think they're bullshit. I can't imagine it sounding too great live. They're pretty funny though.free math wrote: We couldn't stay for Deiphago. Friends that we ran into (Madison people... I really like the High Spirits LP. It's done with such love for the classic metal form, and is pretty impeccably played. It's completely unself-conscious, and a kind of anathema to the so-called hipster metal (although, I doubt Black loses too much sleep over that). Super good time listening, basically. But it may not be everyone's thing, and I can see if it comes off as corny or something. But yeah, I dig it. Dawnbringer is another Black project, but encompasses heavier influences, but has that same catchiness.
Re: the IHM metal thread
They're also raving anti-semites.free math wrote:Black metal is not an area I know much about, but I saw a really good band last night called Nyogthaeblisz. Re: the IHM metal thread
I was vaguely aware that they were questionable because of the Chaos in Tejas thing, but I thought it was more to do with them being associated with SSP. Although, now that I look into it more, they were on some compilation called, "Declaration of Anti-Semetic Terror" on SSP. Although, It does appear they're equal opportunity haters; and it's hard to tell what the actual band motivations are other than, uh, chaos and anti-humanism (maybe there's an interview that sheds more light on it, although who wants to read it?). None the less, repellent. This whole area of black metal is rife with confused assholes, especially those who populate the SSP roster, which has a load of disgusting NSBM on it; again, too bad bands like Heresiarch and Vaesaleth (as far as I know are *safe*) are associated with that label at all. Hard not to feel a little dirty trawling this area of music sometimes.Gaendaal wrote: They're also raving anti-semites.

Thanks for this rec. Enjoying Nucleus a lot at this very moment.Tanner wrote:Dawnbringer is another Black project, but encompasses heavier influences, but has that same catchiness.
edit: Note the capital B in "Black" as this is not in any way black metal. (The Wire's habit of capitalizing genres drives me nuts.)

Spire - Metamorph
Nice EP of bleak and hypnotic black metal, also available as free download on bandcamp.

Re: the IHM metal thread
Lord Mantis --- Pervertor just came out...nasty straight ahead death metal with great vocals
It's a blues riff in B watch me for the changes
Re: the IHM metal thread

Nobody mentioned this yet? Maybe not metal in the riffs-and-blasts sense but certainly orbiting the same star.
Re: the IHM metal thread
Is it drone type of stuff? I keep thinking it's like Birchville Cat Motel, which in that case I would rather just listen to BCM... but I dunno, maybe I'm wrong?Gaendaal wrote:

I've been digging the reissue of Negative Plane's "et in secula..." dlp on Ajna lately. It's pretty much mandatory stuff for anyone into contemporary black metal... one of the few bands in that genre you can say that about.
I also picked up the vinyl edition of Diocletian's "War of All against All" on parasitic/Iron Bonehead. Obviously, pretty killer stuff from one of the best bands in the black/death axis. . . with some mindboggling artwork, reminding me of old Heavy Metal mags and Simon Bisley warscapes -- massive armies blowing the shit out each other as Satan holds court. Doom Kult!
Speaking of amazing artwork, I finally got myself Blasphemophegor's "The III command of Absolute Chaos." Two painted covers(!) chock full of cosmic devil penises and demonic vortexes, oddly fitting the brutal badassery of the music-- Blasphemy worship, but done really well. Bass player rocks a gasmask and army helmet live, as well. So there's that. I don't really understand the chaos-worship with these kind of bands, but in some ways it's a bit of a welcome reprieve from the dreary satanism. And I'll take odes to nuclear holocaust over trascendental jimmer-jabber anyday. Blasphemophegor's members also have some of the best names in metal history too: Atomic Incinerator of Necronuclear Collapse & Plutonium Winds! Mom must be proud.
Re: the IHM metal thread
The Locrian/Mamiffer? No, nothing like BCM. It's sparse metallic riffs but with the occasional section of frail piano and female vocals.Tanner wrote:Is it drone type of stuff? Re: the IHM metal thread
Ah, ok. I probably had it confused with something else, or I was just being suitably kneejerk... it's the Locrian thing. I probably need to investigate both groups more.Gaendaal wrote:The Locrian/Mamiffer? No, nothing like BCM. I've been listening to very little metal the last few days, and I'm more cheerful. Not good.
