Wire Magazine Records of the Year 2011 (Spoilers)

The Wire list struck me as surprisingly irrelevant/uninteresting, to be honest, save for a few exceptions. Boomkat's list on the other hand I really like. I don't necessarily agree with all their choices (aTelecine over Jenny Hval!?), despite Tragedy being my #1 as well, but I can definitely respect it

As far as the Boomkat list goes – and just about any year-enders, really – the artist charts are where it's at. The vagaries and messiness of personal taste are far more interesting than canon-making.

I found Slugabed on the boring side. The Mural album is very nice but isn't really the kind of thing that rocks my world. However, the Denzler solo....... were I to make like a top 20 or 25 of the year, it would stand pretty good odds of locking in a spot on the list.

Well, I enjoyed reading both Boomkat's own list as well as the artist lists. It's not so much to be informed of other people's tastes (not that interesting per se), but great for discovering music I might like. On the subject of year-end lists, I was pleasantly surprised to see how consistently popular Jenny Hval was with the staff members of cokemachineglow, considering their general profile is more typical indie fare (I share their love for Grimes).

FWIW, Mural is my disc of the year. Close call between this and "A blue book" (Marchetti/Capparos).
For me though it's not so much about hearing the most groundbreaking thing ever, but also to listen to folks perfecting their method. As I feel is the case with both of these discs.

I don't think that makes you different from anyone else. I don't recall any particular groundbreaking/hot new artist records going around this year.

In fact, I'd go as far as saying there have been more breakthrough records in the past couple of years then there have been in some time.

The wire EAI list in question is all method perfection records, they just happen to be by artists whose method I feel pretty ambivalent about.

I'm pretty sure that's why any of us read these lists! My point is that looking at individual lists tends to, for me at least, generate more interesting results than the so-called 'official' ones.

I like the Silencers disc (on SOFA) more than the live Mural one (as far as Kim Myhr stuff goes).

Nothing would get old faster than a record collection made up of The Wire's end-of-year top tens. Arto Lindsay and Sonic Youth CDs all in piles gathering dust. You'd have hammered the Robert Wyatt and random token jazz reissues so hard by the end of it that any Stock Aitken Waterman production would sound like fucking Mozart.

the Annette Peacock reissue was new to me, and I'm totally glad for it. I remember my elation upon finding the vinyl maybe five/six years ago... hopefully the new media gets that recording the listens it deserves...
