It could be argued that a lot of Metallica fans have felt 'betrayed' since, oooh, the early 90s. The (fan) reactions I've seen to the Lou Reed collab have been more a sort of resigned bewilderment rather than outrage. No one really expects a lot from Metallica these days.

Guessing you didn't read it yet:
An abridged list of things Metallica has done to cause its fan base to feel betrayed: getting haircuts, making a video for "One," headlining a Lollapalooza tour no one really liked, responsibly dealing with their alcoholism, writing a song that required James Hetfield to sing on key, hiring a replacement for bassist Cliff Burton, replacing the bassist who replaced Cliff Burton, not having enough bass on … And Justice for All, not writing songs that were 11 minutes long, suing the same people who purchased their T-shirts, writing the song "2x4," wearing trousers that cost more than $33, and transitioning away from a lyrical preoccupation with killing other people and toward a lyrical preoccupation with killing themselves.
You, of all people, should understand

Even I, as a non-fan, resent them for allowing Lars to live :D

do you think it would be ok if i were to like this album without actually hearing it? because i don't want to hear it but i feel like it deserves to be liked.

Me too! I was secretly hoping that this would turn out to to be such a stunner that it would silence all the sceptics. However, from what I've heard so far....sadly not.

Of course! That's what our man Adrian does with every Erstwhile release :D
Seriously, just tried to listen to this (the thread piqued my curiosity, for some inexplicable reason) and failed. Bloody awful stuff. After a certain age, "pop stars" should either gracefully bow out or be put to sleep like old diseased pets. Music journalists too.

Following the suggestions of several fans, including Weasel Walter, I've tried on numerous occasions, but have never had much enthusiasm for it. The doom stuff appeals sometimes, but Black / Death tend to leave me cold. Still treasure the old Carcass albums I invested in back in the John Peel days. But I used to be quite into Lou. Why do you ask anyway?

this album is obviously terrible and thus fascinating. the best description i've seen for it was someone (dilloway?) calling it "outsider art." which makes sense if you think of the life experiences of metallica dudes and lou - completely, utterly outside any kind of normal, relatable, human life experience for the last however many years. my main problem is the terrible drum sounds. ugh, that snare! same reason the last couple metallica singles i heard were unlistenable.

all the VU records are some of the greatest albums ever made. due in no small part to reed's songwriting, but also of course because of the other members, their influences and friends, the zeitgeist, etc.

I like to toy around with the idea that this is the local metal luminaries from Pocatello, Idaho, and the guy reciting the lyrics is the drummer's creative freaky grandpa. Not many people would care about the sounding results at all (and after all, I think rightly so).

Metallica has some cool middle school memories for me, Slayer I think holds up the best among them since they were the most cartoonish, but I've never had any interest in Megadeth whatsoever, even as a kid. Thrash is mostly boring for me anyway; not extreme enough, too much like a super serious version of hair metal or something. I do like Nuclear Assault a lot though.
First 3 Metallica albums were great, Slayer simply have made some of the best rock albums of all times, even if Tom Araya is a complete dickhead, Megadeth...bah....never liked them...

Lulu, I have a heard a few songs, but it doesn't sound bad, in a lot of ways it looks like a fascinating record, for sure more interesting and adventurous than most of the stuff Metallica have realized after the first seminal albums. A lot of reviews criticize the absurd lyrics, but well, I'm italian, so I don't really understand much of what's going on :D When a record gets so much negative critics there must be something good going on...
The review on Drownedinsound is cool http://drownedinsound.com/releases/1660 ... ws/4143883

Word. And I like metal, fwiw.

Anyway, it would be cool to discuss an album that has more... relevance to people on this board, rather than an obvious pile of shit no one really cares about (sorry Schick). But what do I know? Maybe it's easier to point out the awful albums than the good? I suppose I'm as much a culprit... And this isn't to get into an argument about what's more relevant either. But seriously.

after actually listening to this, some of the tracks with strings are pretty cool (the third track in particular), and lou sounds like a crazy old man (the first line in the album is great), but it all falls apart pretty quickly, the guitar stuff is boring, and it's all mixed horribly. like many things of this type it approaches genuine quality in some spots, is entertainingly bad in others, and is really boring for the most part.
