Recent purchases redux
Re: Recent purchases redux
c-schulz & hajsch s/t
toshimaru nakamura - maruto
th c-schulz is great.. tonal, varied, affecting. the nakamura has a weird, loaded pressure. there are glassy, laser-like frequencies that singe the hair cells in my ears. gotta keep distance between myself and the speakers. there are nice subtleties to it

Re: Recent purchases redux
bit of a mixed bag with your cassettes.
the Nick Cave is fabulous in places
the Prince album is a belter as is the Grace Jones but why the fuck did you buy They Might Be Giants - Lincoln? they are really offensive.
Not heard that Beastie Boys album since it came out but seem to remember it were good.
Elvis Costello,yes Elvis Costello.
Jazz is okay

Re: Recent purchases redux
thanks you for enlightening me dear sir. i don't know what i'd do without you.
what makes you think i didn't know what i were buying, though?
and it's always hit or miss when i am buying cassettes, they cost next to nothing so i have some fun. i don't really need that Ellington.

Re: Recent purchases redux
I pretty much only buy CDs at shows nowadays, so I used the occasion of the Just Not Cricket festival to nab a lot of stuff:
From Matchless:
Alexander von Schlippenbach with Eddie Prevost duo disc
AMM w/ John Butcher
AMM - Uncovered Correspondence (already one of my favorites. I'm such a shameless Tilbury fan)
Eddie Prevost, Alan Wilkinson, and Joe Williamson
And Prevosts new book, The First Concert. Did Prevost inadvertantly (or intentionally?) reveal what AMM stands for on the cover, or is that just clever wordplay? Probably the latter I guess.
Also a nice disc from Tony Bevan, with Mark Sanders on Drums, John Edwards on bass, Ashley Wales on electronics, and my new favorite vibes player Orphy Robinson, called "We Packed Are Bags"
And finally two discs from Rhodrie Davies, the duo with John Butcher on Ftarri, and the solo disc on Confront.
But the best thing I got from this festival was the lo-fi recording on my MP3 player of a Lol Coxhill and Eddie Prevost duo. Hopefully this will see a proper CD release someday.

Lol Coxhill is a hero in Wigan, when the Wigan Jazz Festival was on he used to busk in front of the Bricklayers Arms (ruff as fuck)
recon he gave as good as he got -fine,fine feller.

Re: Recent purchases redux
last few CDs I bought recently:
KIT: Broken Voyage
KIT: Invocation
AIDS Wolf vs. Athletic Automation: Clash of the Life-force Warriors
AIDS Wolf: Dustin' Off the Sphinx
Half Japanese: Loud/Horrible
Half Japanese: Our Solar System
Didn't listen to any Half Japanese yet, except for snippets on the internet which sounded like a lot of fun. Already love KIT a lot. Still "on the fence" about AIDS Wolf, maybe these two new ones change that in some way.
It's nice to explore new stuff, and thereby finding things I really enjoy totally brightens my November-days.

Is this worth it? I know it's not a lot of money ultimately, but I've read some middling reviews of the actual presentation.grisha wrote:Wombatz wrote:
Anyway in the spirit of massive American consumption I bought some used stuff yesterday:
Cultes Des Ghoules "Haxan"
Mournful Congregation "The June Frost"
Acid Witch "Stoned"
The Atlas Moth's new one
And a random Turkish black metal album that I can't remember the name of off hand, but actually is very good Ajna Offensive type stuff.
Re: Recent purchases redux
Presentation is awful. Music is glorious (8 great to killer cds, only one weaker to these ears (Son of Sisyphus)). What a run. (I had good mp3s of the Vade Mecums, but not least because of instrumentation the upgrade was definitely worth it.)Tanner wrote:Is this worth it?
