Re: top 50 of the last 50 years
In my book (fond memories of music school..) Classical refers to ca.1750 - 1820 (Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven.. cf Charles Rosen's The Classical Style), as opposed to Baroque (before) and Romantic (after). But I see what Jason means. Nice list, that, too.Jason Brogan wrote:I was thinking of music from the Medieval through the Romantic period (i.e., what is typically categorized as "classical").jon abbey wrote:what do you mean by this? about half of your list looks like classical music to me.Jason Brogan wrote:I've purposely disregarded any "classical" recordings as my favorites of those would constitute a list of at least 50.

Re: top 50 of the last 50 years
Since I'm pretty much into rock music these days, I'll cut short my choices in jazz + classical.
Deerhoof: The Man The King The Girl
Deerhoof: Reveille (or Half-Bird - both still too new for me to say now)
Nisennenmondai: Neji/Tori (or Destination Tokyo? - both still too new for me to say now)
Erase Errata: Other Animals
Finally Punk: Casual Goths
Melt-Banana: Charlie
Melt-Banana: Scratch or Stitch
Melt-Banana: Thirteen Hedgehogs
Public Image Limited: Metal Box
Teenage Jesus and the Jerks: Shut up and Bleed (compilation of almost everything they released back then)
Frank Zappa: Joe's Garage 2+3
King Crimson: U.S.A.
King Crimson: Red
Björk: Post
PJ Harvey: Rid of Me
Sonic Youth: Kill Yr Idols
Sonic Youth: A Thousand Leaves
Captain Beefheart: Trout Mask Replica
Massacre: Killing Time
Palais Schaumburg
Last Exit: Best of Live
Arto Lindsay: Aggregates 1-26
Elliott Sharp/Carbon: Monster Curve
Skeleton Crew: the 1CD-reissue which includes almost all of both LPs
Le Tigre: Feminist Sweepstakes
Yeah Yeah Yeahs: Fever to Tell
John Zorn: Spy vs. Spy
John Zorn: Locus Solus
Peter Brötzmann: Machine Gun
Manfred Schoof: European Echoes
Brötzmann/van Hove/Bennink: Balls
Gunter Hampel: Journey to the Song Within
Gunter Hampel: 8th of July
Alexander von Schlippenbach: Living Music
Globe Unity Orchestra: Improvisations
Schlippenbach Trio: Detto Fra Di Noi
Schlippenbach/Johansson etc: Idylle und Katastrophen
Cecil Taylor: Nailed
Steve Lacy: The Owl
Yosuke Yamashita Trio + Schoof: Distant Thunder
Spontaneous Music Ensemble: 85 Minutes (aka Quintessence)
Karlheinz Stockhausen: Kontrapunkte etc. (Verlag... also includes 60s works, so it fits within the given time span)
Luigi Nono: Variazioni Canoniche / Varianti / No Hay Caminos, Hay ... (collegno)
Morton Feldman: For Samuel Beckett (I think on CPO)
Brian Ferneyhough: La Chute d'Icare, Superscritio etc (on etcetera)
Giacinto Scelsi: Works for String Quartets etc (Arditties)
Wolfgang Rihm: Etudes d'apres Seraphin
Milton Babbitt: An Elizabethan Sextette, Vision and Prayer etc (CRI)
Le Domaine musical: 1956-1967 Volume 1 (historical recordings of works by Boulez, Pousseur, Messiaen etc)
There are several bands/musicians which I left out completely, and of which I'd loved to add a compilation-CDR (tracks I really love spread over their entire discographical output): DAF, Henry Cow, Art Bears, Can, This Heat, Etron Fou Leloublan, Aksak Maboul/Honeymoon Killers, Pere Ubu, Portishead, Die Tödliche Doris, early Swans, The Slits, Tujiko Noriko, M.I.A. (well, + many many 20th century composers & free jazz musicians).

Re: top 50 of the last 50 years
haven't had the change to thoroughly read this thread, but one question to jon: no Radio City?
Re: top 50 of the last 50 years
yeah, that could easily be there certainly. 50 really isn't quite enough.snailed wrote:haven't had the change to thoroughly read this thread, but one question to jon: no Radio City?

100 wouldn't be either. 200, 300.. any advance on 300? I'm enjoying reading this thread very much but have abandoned any hope of trying to contribute a list to it myself. Top 50 films, anyone (oops, forgot, y'already did that Jon
)?

Re: top 50 of the last 50 years
the only good thing about trying to do this was to make myself realize that there is actually quite a bit of great music out there. couldn't trim it down to fifty so i gave up.

Re: top 50 of the last 50 years
Shit, I just realized I can't make my list because Kind of Blue is 52 years old.
Abandon thread.

Actually, 300 would be too much, I think. Even at 100 I think you would start to see some dilution.Dan Warburton wrote:100 wouldn't be either. 200, 300.. any advance on 300? Re: top 50 of the last 50 years
The worst representation of that portion of the era. Minutemen and Beastie Boys are more challenging of a listening experience that anything in the improv realm will ever be. Especially in the seminal years of the House movement. Kinda puts everything to shame after.jon abbey wrote:
Minutemen-Double Nickels on the Dime (SST) (1984)
Pere Ubu-Terminal Tower (Rough Trade) (1985)
Beastie Boys-Paul's Boutique (Capitol) (1989)
Ami Yoshida/Toshimaru Nakamura-Soba to Bara (Erstwhile) (2009)
And 2009 should be remembered as the year that this came out:
DJ Sprinkles-Midtown 120 Blues (Mule Musiq) (2009)
A sonic rebuttal to what has been overlooked in the deep house genre's origin since its inception.
Re: top 50 of the last 50 years
can you rephrase that in a dialect of English I speak? and what does the Ami/Toshi record have to do with your unasked for commentary?Neon Blossom wrote:The worst representation of that portion of the era. jesus, if I was going to name all the records I thought sucked on people's lists here, I'd have quite a long list, but that seems pretty pointless and insulting.

Re: top 50 of the last 50 years
Not trying to insult anyone, even if comes off like that, just so much more potential in that era IMO. And I have the Ami / Toshi on there because I am a fan of that recording no doubt, but I was pointing out the DJ Sprinkles release of that year in case anyone missed it.jon abbey wrote:can you rephrase that in a dialect of English I speak? and what does the Ami/Toshi record have to do with your unasked for commentary?Neon Blossom wrote:The worst representation of that portion of the era. Re: top 50 of the last 50 years
make your own list, then. those are odd records to single out, those first few Pere Ubu singles are about as good as rock music has ever been.
