Best music magazines

Seeing that Wire was critizied, I'm wondering what music magazines you prefer to read for inspiration.

bixobal. yeti. as loud as possible is pretty good too. plenty of non-print blogs.

for the most part i spend too much time on a music message board as it is, it's hard to find more attention span for music magazines.

yeah, the music magazine is kind of an anachronistic form in the age of the internet, not that it necessarily has to be that way.

I enjoy signal to noise as far as published magazines go. Mostly blogs these days, can't afford magazine subscriptions...

I liked this. A lot of the music covered isn't really my bag, but the depth of some of the articles (30+ pages on broken flag, with more or less any participant they could get hold of getting a say) is impressive. I hope they can branch out into more areas of experimental music in the later issues.

i'd like to second the As Loud As Possible recomendation. Despite my initial reservations regarding the structure/content of the articles -before actually reading them that was (see other thread), issue #1 has so far been a blast and a very refreshing take on the magazine format (not that it's something new, but considering what has been available in the past few years, for me it's the right way to go). I sure hope the focus remains on offering the best content, and that there's no rush in putting out the issue #2, yearly sounds fine at this point

Hopefully. Second issue will be 200 pages, so we'll see if November 2011 is doable. That's our aim.

I just discovered MusicWorks at Green Apple books here in SF... it's a canadian 3x/yr mag, though I don't know that I love it... just a few pages of (short) reviews, several features (Barry Traux is what got me to pick it up... 'eh' interview though), and a 4 page 'how-to' on a single circuit DIY light controlled oscillator ... which would be cooler if that wasn't already an incredibly easy to find schematic/primer.
I give this a sturdy "huh".

Hehe I write for them. Although I can certainly understand your critiques I think there are some nice ideas. I like that it's a bit Canadian-centric, because there's plenty of activity here that is going on that warrants wider audiences. The Wire, which is sort of the international experimental music tastemaker is starting to pick up on some of this stuff, but not totally.

I think the design of the reviews section contributes a bit of weird feel, and the 3x a yearness is a bit unfortunate because it means we're constantly behind the times. I just appreciate that their journalistic stance is quite different than, say the Wire or Signal To Noise, and as I mentioned, it focuses on Canadian activity.

(I agree that their DIY thing is a bit silly and overly novel (I feel it's sort of geared a people who wouldn't look online for a schematic!))
