Today's setup. The electronics on the right are being used to activate my prepared wire strung harp on the left. Used this particular iteration of my setup for the next part of the Eleven Clouds project.

No kidding, I've got one of those little steel wire balls as well, looks exactly the same! I found mine on the street one day. I used it on a small xylophone, though (no picture unfortunately).

i played a noise show in a stretch hummer last night using this set up
i also had three banana-to-alligator clip cables that take patch points out to a loose snare, dipstick, and spring
which i use as my "interface"

note the scooped mids and maxxxed volume on the eq pedal....

Wow, Melo has a nice web site, and I'm not even a gear head [I still have my 1974 Guild D-35.]

I scrolled down the picture and immediately went "oooh, is that a Goodrich?"

To be fair, you gots to appreciate a good volume pedal.

Those are some nice guitars, Barry!

Barry, do you use any effects or is this your whole setup? I myself was thinking of getting an Esquire-style guitar, my weird chopped up strat copy is kind of falling apart. I'll cheap it by getting a used Standard Tele from the local music store, taking out the neck puckup, and replacing the bridge and pickguard though...

I myself am addicted to the sound of the neck pickup, and would never get rid of it.

Although, with a Tele (or Tele-like guitar like the Esquire) the meat, the character, is in the bridge pickup..(Twang..)

Barry. All this guitar porn is giving me major Telecaster lust..

I got kind of frustrated with the fact that when I have the neck pickup sounding good, the bridge is too trebly, and when the bridge sounds good, the neck is too bassy. I found that if I crank up the bass on the bridge pickup and mess with the tone knob I can get all the different sounds I want, plus I have access to all the harmonics on the instrument because the node points don't cancel things out the way they do with the neck PU. On the other hand, maybe that would keep me from being a bad Bailey knockoff if I couldn't ping out harmonics all day long! Another though I had was cranking the screws down on the neck PU until it's flush with the body, and putting an Esquire pickguard over it. That way the neck pickup would pick up the sounds of the guitar body instead of the strings, assuming it's sufficiently microphonic... would be interesting!

yup, thats all i use apart from an ebow and a pick and the reverb/tremelo thats built into the amp. with the acoustic, i also used a few one-offs to excite the strings for 'an unrhymed chord' like a little fan like keith uses and a little curved bow called a piranha (and probably a few more that i've forgotten about and only used once).

oh, and on 'Black,White,Red,Green,Blue' the score calls for playing the body of the guitar in specific area with a soft mallet. but i consider that an extension of the pick or fingers rather than an 'affect'.

i generally dislike guitar effects boxes and would rather get a straight guitar tone that i am happy with (an never-ending search) and go with that. i only recently bought the volume pedal because i needed one for the gig i played with Michael Pisaro.

the butterscotch esquire had a neck pickup in it when i found it and i kept it for a while but even with guitars, i like to find 'the' sound of that particular guitar (for me) and stick with it. so i went back to the single pickup and using the tone control and selector switch, i can get all the sounds and variations i need.

i love that sound too, and at some point im sure i will get another tele with a neck pickup. but as the 52 is, in fact, an esquire, i thought it best to return it to its natural state. blue one i happened to find right now, when i was in need of a second guitar and fell in love with it.

it is hard to balance the two on a tele.

and very true - harmonics jump out of these guitars. im currently playing Pisaro's 'Mind Is Moving I' which is 90% harmonics and they ring for days on these guitars.

if you wanted to experiment with pickups, maybe try a barcus berry or some other transducer under the pickguard - that might be fun. zappa used to do that - he had them in the neck, in the body... sounded pretty great.
