jon abbey wrote:one reason Den stands out a bit is that both Drumm and Sugimoto changed directions drastically soon after that, whereas maybe some other musicians from then built on that work in the same direction, so in those cases, maybe the Kud (in order to differentiate Jesses) would be more likely to pull out their more recent work? I know I find myself playing Good Morning Good Night more than do, for instance.

anyway, just a guess...
yeah, now that you mention it, that is probably part of the reason, though i hadn't consciously though of that before. there's actually a preciously small window where sugimoto was making work i really connected with, and while i like a lot of drumm's recent work, there's almost no improv. so this record just represents a kind of pinnacle of both of their improvising careers, in addition to being a really strong record musically that i find consistently rewarding. although the constituent elements are pretty transparent (drumm does a surprising amount of just ground hum/buzz, sugimoto doing his clean tones with occasional long feedback swells), the placement/arrangement is great, and i'm not really aware of many other records that sound much like it.

and yes, with someone like muller or nakamura (to name two others i was digging a lot around then), i'd probably be more likely to put on something newer. though their
*duo disc*, embedded in the erstwhile box set, is another i also put on regularly. great record.

meaning you don't like this disc, or there's lots of other good stuff from then? i don't dispute the latter, but i just rarely find myself pulling out too many other "older" improv discs that i've had since they came out. what else would be on your short list?

I really like den, I meant the latter (but mostly mildly challenging the notion of there being little else that merits a current listen from the early aughts).

was never a huge akiyama fan and have only passing familiarity with those discs, for the most part. i'll keep an eye out for them. to the rest, i guess it's a bit of what jon said. never actually got "fine," but clearly AMM have a big catalog, so i'll listen to whatever and don't as much think of them as "late 90's/early '00's." embarrassingly, i only ever got my own copy of duos for doris in the past year or so, so that one definitely gets and has gotten a lot of recent play. but i also think it's pretty damn highly regarded (and easily available, to this crew at least), so it's nothing like a "lost gem" or whatnot. i need to get "trem" and "absinth." what's "loose community" like?

thanks for the list!

Both the Irvine Arditti and the Clemens Merkel recordings of La Lontananza Nostalgica Utopica Futura yesterday and today.

This piece is being performed by David Bowlin (violin) and Joshua Rubin (electronics) this Sunday in Oberlin, OH. Berio's Sequenza VIII and Sciarrino's Caprice's No. 1 and 2 for violin are also on the programme.

There's another version of 'La Lontananza...' on Kairos with Melise Mellinger (of ensemble recherche) on violin and Salvatore Sciarrino doing the electronics/sound projection. I think that's my favourite of the realisations of the piece that I've heard. Great music.

Today I listened to Permutative Distorsion/p16.d4 the first time, while looking for mushrooms (no druggy ones!)

Out of 3, I liked the earliest recording to some degree - there's still some vocals, embedded into rather sparse surroundings, which in a way makes it fit well into the weirdo-NDW-scenery of the early 80s.
The later (mid 80s?) stuff really bored me. After the track with the overused "Machine Gun"-sample, I really had not much motivation left to continue listening (but I bravely did).

see, i definitely like all those, but i just don't play them a ton. i guess it is partly what jon mentioned - i'd be more likely to play newer work from all those folks (as i mentioned somewhere, 'kravis rhonn project" is KILLING ME - great one!). actually, i never got too into trio at off site, but maybe i should try it again. kinda got me off guard way back when - the first really sparse sparse sugimoto i heard (got it after a great trio show with him, rowe, and gunter muller, though).

at the risk of being overly pedantic, Smith wasn't on the original record, that's a trio with Bennink and Maarten Altena. he's just on the two bonus CD tracks, which are from a Brown/Smith duo record called 'Creative Improvisation Ensemble' recorded three years later:
