jim o'rourke - the visitor

revealing itself to be rich, enjoyable.

I've listened to this several times over the last few days. I feel safe in generalizing that 75-80% of the posters here would/will hate this record. It's long the lines of Eureka's full-blown orchestrations and pop lushness, Bad Timing's acoustic guitar underpinings, but without lyrics. At times it sounds like Tortoise, prog rock, Steely Dan, even Zappa at his most melodic. If that doesnt turn you off, then you'll probably like it. I've been really enjoying it. Very nice use of dynamics between sections. Its very well done. Jim O'Rourke plays all the instruments.

It may be a sign that I need to spend less time on IHM, that the first time I listened to it, one of the first thoughts that popped into my head was, "Boy, Jon would REALLY hate this record."

David never really says too much about what's behind homo releases, even when they are his own as in this case, leaving it up to the listener to make conjectures. On the page for this release there is the following information:

So my conjecture in this case is that David has loaded his four tape recorders with recordings from the thanked musicians and is engaged in real time mixing, layering and perhaps processing of these. So it's sort of a "live maximalism" in a way. There are certainly sounds that I recognize from some of these artists (Lambkin and Lescalleet in particular) and knowing how David has worked with the layering of existing material in several other projects this seems a pretty reasonable assumption. In the main after an initial sparse build up this strays toward a denser, noisier sound (though with the occasional bit of space) but never toward the overwhelming degree that maximalism reached. I enjoyed it for the most part on this one listen, though I could have done without the more overt Lambkin bits. Anyway well worth checking out and its available in a free lossless recording, so click those links.

Huh, I actually listened to the mp3 since I'm at work but I was planning to grab the FLAC when I return home. But I'll abuse the work bandwidth and see if I can grab that FLAC. The mp3 sounds good though, a decent enough preview.

actually this piece is 100% original source material. i used a handheld tape recorder to record different instruments and such around the house. andrea also added a few minutes to the tapes, most notably the breathing, which certainly brings up the lambkin reference. the people i thanked were people who have been influential in my desire to explore improvisation.

glad you're enjoying the piece. this one came out of left-field, so maybe i should have included more of a description...

The ekg has got better and better in each listen. The melodic fragments in the last piece sound as good and surprising as the first time. The pacing of sections is outstanding.

actually this piece is 100% original source material. i used a handheld tape recorder to record different instruments and such around the house. andrea also added a few minutes to the tapes, most notably the breathing, which certainly brings up the lambkin reference. the people i thanked were people who have been influential in my desire to explore improvisation.

Ah ha! Well cool, I have to admit this thought crossed my mind, but yeah that Lambkin-esque moment totally threw me. Thanks for the further information, always part of the fun with improvised music!

20 year old tape of one of my first bands I was creatively involved in (writing pieces, fighting about my opinion about the repertoire etc).
Partly it's a very tough listen (imagine a saxophonist with very bad intonation soloing over Goodbye Porkpie Hat without any clue about the underlying harmonies.
