Gul 3 / Tetuzi Akiyama - Nero's Expedition

Side 1: Pretty good stuff, track 2 is the longest, and noisiest. Gul 3 seems a little overwhelmed on that track, but the first and third tracks are about what you would expect. Good so far.

Also, it should be noted that the cover of my copy has the artwork and track listing imprinted on the inside of an inside-out Conway Twitty album (they ripped it open and turned it inside out). Very amusing. RECYCLE!

They always play him (Twitty, not Akiyama!) on the family guy, I always wonder how they settled on him instead of any other old time country singer - maybe the rights to his performances are just particularly inexpensive - I wonder if it'll boost his sales amongst the college crowd...

and yes - RECYCLE!!

Erik Satie.....figuring out who I like best with the piano works. Roge, De leeuw or Aldo Ciccolini. Ciccolini I find a little dry. De Leeuw is very slow, but his interpretation I find more engaging. Haven't Made it to Roge yet.

dunno, it's probably not fair, but after reading the Wire review of Manafon, my anticipation level has dropped to about zero. Penman might not hear it the way I end up hearing it, but his perspective confirms all of my worst suspicions about how this project could have ended up. that being said, coming in with low/no expectations makes it more likely I'll end up getting something out of it.

The pick-up group of elite improvisors might be new, but David Sylvian’s song remains the same, says Ian Penman

Manafon is the first time David Sylvian has seriously disappointed me in (gosh) 30 years – although, if it’s any consolation, it’s hardly due to any lack of ambition on his part. The portents feel great: if you thought 2003’s Blemish went out on a limb you ain’t heard nothing yet! Where the gorgeous, thorny, nonpareil Blemish had intermittent spiky/gooey interjections from Derek Bailey and Christian Fennesz, here Sylvian’s cherry-pick pick-up group includes players from AMM (Rowe, Tilbury) and Polwechsel (Dafeldecker, Moser, Stangl), and Evan Parker and Otomo Yoshihide and Sachiko M and more.

(Answer: he doesn’t even try.) And is David Sylvian really the man for this particular go-with-your-messy-instincts job? (Answer: not on this evidence.) Like any kind of art practice you have to learn patience, sensitivity to temperature, moment, momentum and (here) the psychology of the people you play with. Sylvian appears to have plumped for Option B – taking the work of these elite players and recording his usual vocals over the top. Which could make you feel very cynical about the whole enterprise, and reignite accusations Sylvian’s faced in the past (unfairly, I’d say) about a certain boutiquey pick ’n’ mix attitude on his part towards sidemen. (And these are sidemen: it’s not like David Tibet, say, where it says: “On this album Current 93 are:...” and then a democratic list. This is A Work By David Sylvian.)

After listening the heck out of Manafon for three weeks, all I retain of its nine tracks, its dream list of free music luminaries, is exactly this: one dark arc moment of Evan Parker’s sax for ten to 15 seconds, and... and a lot of David Sylvian. His voice is mixed way up, but never for a second sounds – well, mixed up.

Two more sessions spent with the record this morning....
Other than the mention of Parker's contribution [which I agree with completely], this review is a bunch of horseshit....which is fine in itself - everyone has the right to critique music they hate....nobody has to like Sylvian or what he's done for the last three decades!
Let's remember Wire had to balance front-page coverage of Sylvian previous month with bile in the following issue

Manuel Mota - Quartets 2004 (Headlights)

This is one of these discs that hit the right spot straight from the first few notes (sounds). Abstract yet concrete, minimalist yet spiky.
Mota on guitar with Fala Mariam trombone, Margarida Garcia bass and César Burago percussion, all manage to blend a very contemporary sound with all sorts of influences. Intimate, sensitive and detailed sound makes this very special.

You may know this, but these two can be heard to great effect on Sei Miguel's The Tone Garden, as well as Rafael Toral's Space Elements, Volume 1. Really sensitive, organic interactions, acute listening.

I'm not a big Eliane Radigue expert...but I can't stop listening to that record!! not sure if it helps you.....maybe it would be more interesting to read the opinion by somebody more familiar with her work.

talking about trumpet improv sessions there is a mind blowing disc by Itaru Oki & Otomo Yoshihide, "Encounter", I wonder if anyone knows if it is still in print.
