Luigi Nono - Guai ai gelidi mostri/Quanno stanno morendo. Diario Polacco No. 2 (Neos 2008)

Neos is a very good house for classical & contemporary music. Worth checking out.
And is supported by BBVA, the 2nd biggest spanish bank. Strange!!!

Disc 2

Who knows what vagaries and whatnot make certain works hit you hard over the years, but the last 2 pieces on this disc are really grabbing me right now. Huzzah!

Of the recent releases on the IMJ sublabels I think this is the stronger one. However I find both of them a bit thin, that is to say I enjoy them both as background music well enough, but they don't sustain closer scrutiny.

Bruno Maderna Quadrivium [1969], Aura [1972] & Biogramma [1972], conducted -which in these works means half composed- by Giuseppe Sinopoli.

One of my favorite composer.

Amazing sonorities, inflections, whispers and harmonics pulled from the bass, hard to believe this performance is now 33 years old. I bought two releases on the Cramps imprint years ago-the covers were cool and weird music was promised. They were Fluvine and Bailey's Improvisation, Image recorded about a year apart. Wish they would have entered the studio together.

I just bought this at work and am listening to it at this moment. Stephen Steinbrink is a local guy, I had heard his name here and there but kind of wrote him off because I don't really listen to anything indie-rockish or songwriterish anymore, but he played in the store and was just awesome. This CD is a little self-pressed CDR, but he has a full length on gilgongo records which is readily available. It's like Sebadoh's mellower stuff without as much self pity. He's just one of those guys who songs naturally flow out of I guess, which I envy because although I like the music I make, I couldn't write a decent pop song if my life depended on it.
I also got this:

and this:

although I haven't listened to either one yet.

Jesse, have you heard the Bailey/Stevens/Watts "Dynamics of the Impromptu" disc that came out in December? I listened to one Derek Bailey CD extensively, "Music & Dance", but haven't really listened to his other stuff too much. I kind of absorbed his whole approach from that one disc and didn't feel the need to listen to a whole lot of other stuff at the time. I had "Arch Duos" but I couldn't really get into it for some reason. The aforementioned disc was recorded at a club in 1973, I think it should be pretty interesting so I ordered it today.

Sun Ra at Grendel's Lair Halloween 1978.

I'm really surprised... the Sun Ra stuff I heard of 1978 so far was full of arrangements of old swing tunes and tons of pattern-based repetitive vocal-numbers/jams... this one's far more colourful and wild. The first two tunes downright floored me (Sound Mirror/Mayan Temples & Halloween in Harlem). Wow.

I haven't. 90% of the Bailey I still own is from the 70s, as you suggested, "its enough."
I was fortunate that around 1985 an old pal became quite suddenly and inexplicably disaffected with EFI stuff he'd collected for a decade, and gave me many of the now coveted seminal releases of Bailey/Brotz/Parker/Bennik, et al.

Music and Dance is an odd choice as a single Bailey record you've listened to attentively. I'd be curious to read your comments on what you refer to as "his whole approach", but I don't think Bailey's music lends itself to such considerations. Dynamics of the Impromptu is excellent (and it's a reissue). Hope you'll enjoy it.

the first issue had pretty bad sound quality, as I recall. I'd recommend the SME-Quintessence sessions with overlapping personnel from then as a much superior record, but Bailey's not on that. for Bailey, I'd recommend one of his solos, maybe New Sights, Old Sounds or Aida. I agree with Mari that Music and Dance isn't especially representative, although it's one of my faves of his.

we must have an in depth Bailey thread here, right? if not, we should get cracking on that...
