Ruby Ruby Ruby THE SHADOW OF YOUR SMILE (Zarek)

Dan Warburton wrote:Thanks for this! Hey, looks like we need a new thread for that Ruby Ruby Ruby disc eh Jon..? I really didn't like it very much at all (and I thought I was one of the world's number one Margareth fans until this), and would be interested to hear just why you did.
dunno, I can't really defend it much, I just like listening to her in most cases and dug the deconstructions of the jazz standards. "fave 20 or so releases of the year so far" from me isn't especially high praise, it pretty much includes anything I don't want to turn off before the end of one full listen out of boredom or disgust. :)
Funny, I didn't detect much deconstruction to be honest. Just rather tired and not particularly inspiring re-readings of tired old standards. As you're no doubt aware, there are plenty of purist old fart sceptics out there who are all too ready to take a dump from a great height on improvisers who, they say, "can't play" and "can't sing". I happen to think Margareth Kammerer has an amazing voice, and would rate her work on the Charhizma solo debut and the Magic ID disc as high as that of any singer I've discovered in the past twenty years, but if I didn't know those albums and just heard this I'd probably side with the old farts.
But, as usual, healthy disagreement can lead to intelligent discussion - and, as with Death Proof, I'm always open to changes of mind - but you're really going to have to sell me on this one. (Not you personally, Jon, but anyone out there who's as smitten by this as you seem to be. Paging Ignaz Schick!!)

I'm kind of with Dan here. It's a nice disc but she doesn't really do anything new with the songs. No clear "deconstruction" as far as I hear either. It's just a perfectly enjoyable standards album.

i dunno what deconstruction sounds like. album sounds fine, though, and it doesn't feel like a 'standards' gimmick. i'm in favor.

i'm less sure about having this thread in the ihr subforum with no actual review. kinda hard to discuss an opinion at this length.

you know, I was confused about this being in this forum too. Though I actually was assuming a mod had split Dan's post out of someplace else to create this thread rather than Dan opening it that way himself!

Try Braxton's Charlie Parker Project.

Yes, well, er, sorry, didn't know where to put it. IHM? Move it over there if you can, I don't mind. It certainly didn't belong as an appendix to a Tarantino thread in IHF!
There's only one cover version of "A Night In Tunisia" for me, and it's here:

On first listen, I'm pretty much with Dan as well. There were a few subtle, interesting ripples beneath the surface (the organ on a couple of tracks), making me think maybe I missed some other elements as well, but overall...a little strange, maybe, to choose nothing but warhorses and then to play it so straight. Could be the point, I suppose, but if so, not a point I find that interesting.

the project was Ignaz's idea, and Margareth wasn't so sure about it to begin with, but she eventually came around and was very happy with the results.

dunno, maybe I don't know the standards as well as you guys (I was a huge jazzhead but never listened to many vocal records), but I thought they were at least slowed down a bit. it is a concept that goes against my aesthetics, and I doubt I would have listened to it if it were anyone else, but I did, and I enjoyed it.
